If it comes down to a last second shot that means the teams are pretty even, just sayin'.

Yeah I think it's closer than I had originally thought when I saw the thread title given the Magic/Bird argument. But that does not mean I don't give the Dream Team the edge and no way no I buy they lose 65% of the time, not with MJ being the difference maker.

Yeah I changed my opinion too, now I think they are even with maybe a slight edge for the new guys.

That’s exactly what I thought and didn’t bother to put in words. The most competitive guy out there in today’s game simply couldn’t hang in that Department, it was a totally different world. Can you picture the reaction when these new guys suggest to Jordan or Bird that they go hang out?

Agree. To be fair to today's a lot of them meet and even play together on AAU teams growing up, so friendships are formed.

They didn't have that back then, so those guys genuinely didn't like each other and some of them still don't. lol

Magic and Bird have become best of friends over the years, but for probably the first 8-10 years or so of their careers, they couldn't stand each other. Even though they didn't know each other.

Defense. Now that's another discussion. One team plays it better than the other and that's the old guys. And the one thing we do know about this game is when two good teams are evenly matched the team with the best player usually comes out on top. And that would be Michael Jordan.

If it came down to a last second shot I'll take my chances with MJ, you can have James.

Exactly. But pay no attention to defense. These younger players are more athletic and shoot 3s

Lol

Jump shooters gonna beat the dream team. Ya know ?

Not sure what you meant by your defense comment. I agree the players today are more athletic and shoot the 3 better. That's why it's close. 65%? Nah.

You're missing it. I looked at the actual Dream Team as they actually were, at those ages, and said 'I wonder if today's players as they are at their ages right now could beat them?'. The fact that you'd need all guys in their prime today to credibly beat the DT half the time is just more evidence that the DT was indeed the greatest team ever assembled. Could the current palyers assemble a team good enough to go toe to toe with them? I think so.

But if you line up the 12 actual DTers at their actual ages with the 12 modern players at theirs, other than Jordan, I'm not sure the DTers are that much more talented. But as has been pointed out, depends on the rules. Modern rules, the modern team wins 60% of the time, old school no zone defense rules, probably they win only 30%

And in the end I was just trying to start a fun convo and I succeeded. So:

Again though, you are talking about actual ages of guys who are close to the end of their careers vs. the actual ages of guys who are in or close to their prime.

All things being equal (as far as ages) I think the Dream Team wins. If they are the same ages, and it's a 7 game series...I think the Dream Team gets a "gentlemen's sweep". If it's the ages they were at the time the team was formed, I'm still taking the Dream Team, but in 6 or 7.

I'm not sure the rules would matter as much because the Dream Team can still defend from the 3 point line to the paint and they had legit rim protectors that the current guys don't have.

I explained my reasoning, if the DTers are in their primes yeah they dominate. But the new guys do have some rim protection, starting with Davis and Durant

I'll give you Davis as a rim protector. But Durant? No. Just because he's 7 feet, doesn't make him a rim protector.

What makes him a rim protector is his almost 2 blocks a game. He's become a elite defender on the Ws

A rim protector in today's game and a rim protector back then, are not the same. Something tells me that guys like MJ, Pippen and Barkley wouldn't exactly be deterred by the sight of Kevin Durant as the last line of defense.

They'd likely take turns putting him on posters.

Davis, on the other hand, might make them think twice.

did i say EVERYBODY in this thread did that...?

I'm just saying it's not turning into yet another MJ vs LeBron thread, at least I hope not. I don't think anyone is arguing 2018 LeBron is better than 1992 Jordan

Fair enough. As I've said the teams are pretty close. Depending on the rules used, one would only slightly beat the other.

Yeah, I don't think it's turning into that either. I think a couple of guys tried to go that route, but it's not the overall tone of the thread.

I'd say that 2018 Lebron is what gives the current guys any chance at all. Without him, this really isn't even much of a discussion, imo.

If anyone is dumb enough to say '18 LeBron's better than '92 MJ they better get their head checked.

As it should be, being the second best player ever. Davis and Durant are pretty important too.

Ftr, that wasn't the slam on KD that it appeared. Today's bigs aren't the rim protectors that players were in the DT era because they don't have to be.

Today's players just don't attack the rim the way guys did in the DT era. I'd wager that if they did, KD would have adjusted his game for it.

So, not lack of ability, more of a lack of need.
