Led Zeppelin: 2.5/5 stars. The first three songs of this album were pretty bad. So bad that they had me on my Spotify app, holding my dick in my hand, going:wtf2:

Luckily, the album picks up speed towards the end. I think, also, I understood more what they were going for. Though the rock music is better at the end, still, heavy rock and the lack of lyrics is kind of annoying. Also, Robert Plant's whaling voice is so annoying. He sounds like a girl crying sometimes.

I was ok with this album, but certainly not a favorite. I like my Robert Plant's vocals and my Jimmy Page's guitar solos to be a lot more somber (read: Stairway To Heaven) than the work on this album.

Another album review coming tonight.

:wtf:

Shit... do people like Led Zeppelin (1969)? @Used 2 B Hu what's my next move here? Can I do that 4-D chess thing that Trump does and say I only did it all in order to get a better deal at the China King Buffet?

LZ II is the superior album. LZ I has its moments (as you note - Side 2 brings it on home... pun intended) but it really more than anything sets the table for what is to come next... and next... and next... and next... and next...

Mr. Sir, thank you for your comment. I always look forward to your feedback. You seem rather keen on helping a young man access critically acclaimed music of yesteryear (I am 20 years old), and I really appreciate it.

You are very knowledgable about rock music (I know most of these are very famous albums, but you appear pretty intimate with literally all of them). What are your favorite albums of all time? I'm more of a film guy than I am a music guy, but if I still told you mine, they'd all be hip-hop. I just got into rock within the last year, hence me not having heard many of the songs on most of the albums on this list.

I used to love Led Zeppelin.
Then I heard every song a million times.
It's annoying because when stations don't know what to play because they are dumb fucks, they play some Led Zeppelin song to be safe.

They get auto terminated on whatever I'm listening on.

LZ III was the second album I ever purchased - Bridge Over Troubled Water was the first. III is still my favorite too. Plant’s vocals were probably at their most powerful on II & III... and the variety of moods and tempos on III really set them up for LZ IV... and beyond.

Sad... but true. And it’s always the same ones. I ripped my Zeppelin CD’s to my iTunes so they play entire album sides instead of individual songs... the way you and I grew up with them. It’s the only way I listen to them especially since I don’t listen to radio unless it’s sports talk. Can’t stand FM music stations anymore... and Sirius is just as bad.

I got in the Napster scene early on before the free download thing got shut down. So as a result of that along with my purchases, I have over 22,000 MP3’s and AAC’s in my iTunes collection. Probably close to 1,500 full digital albums and I’m converting a couple hundred of my vinyl collection to MP3 right now (got my brother-in-law’s USB Turntable). I’m pretty much old school in my tastes and favorites are dependent on my mood or what jazzes me at the moment. But - it’s great that you are discovering these albums in their entirety in the way they were presented to us 30 and 40 years ago.

Example - last night I watched the Classic Albums episode on the first Doors album. That made me go dig up my “Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine” compilation vinyl album... and convert it. Right now, I’m watching the Steely Dan “Classic Albums”... great stuff.

As far as favorites... you already know one (Ziggy Starsust). I never get tired of “Late For The Sky” by Jackson Browne, “Madman Across The Water” by Elton John or “Innervisions” by Stevie Wonder. And if i need a pick me up, a good dose of Black Sabbath “Paranoid” or Metallica “Master Of Puppets” does the trick. And “Second Helping” will always have a place at the front of my list. It was my anthem album in the 70’s.

One last thing - The Velvet Underground. Never got them. I was in the Air Force with a bunch of East Coast dudes that worshiped that band. Just wasn’t my gig. But - those dudes didn’t get Jerry Jeff Walker either.

Viva Terlingua!

Getting back into this, though the album I review today is not included in Rolling Stones' Top 500 list. Nevertheless, Their Satanic Majesties Request: 3.5/5 stars.

I listened to this one this morning all in one go. I really liked the first song, "Sing This All Together," but then I felt like the songs took a dip in quality from there, with "Citadel" being below average and "In Another Land" being average.

By the time I got to side 2 of the album come together, I started to get a sense of the album's feel. It's not a concept album like Elton John's "Tumbleweed Connection" was a concept album. But when listened to as a whole, I definitely felt like the album was construed with the same concept in mind for each song. On their own, the individual songs are nothing to marvel at ("She's a Rainbow" and "Sing This All Together" are probably the best), but when listened to continuously, the album has a weird, captivating aura to it.

I know that The Stones' entrance into psychedelia was, and maybe still is not well received. I don't think this album is as good as Sgt. Pepper (4/5 stars), but I view it in a completely different lens. Mick Jagger's voice is perfect for the genre, and I feel that with better production (the Stones self-produced the album) and more discipline in recording, this could have been a masterpiece.

What album review is next? There's no telling, but I will say that it should drop in an hour or so.

Maybe I'll give it another listen all the way through. If I ever did that it was a long time ago. It's the only one of their first dozen albums that isn't absolutely essential.

The Velvet Underground & Nico: 2.5/5 stars. I am not the hugest Lou Reed guy- some of his stuff is good, other stuff, meh. This is my first time hearing him as part of The Velvet Underground.

Overall, not a bad album, but certainly not a great one. The best songs include "Sunday Morning," "I'm Waiting For The Man," "Femme Fatale," and "Heroin." What's funny is that those four songs are great, not just good. What's a shame is that the rest of the album drags like it does. After "Heroin," the rest of the album is boring/forgettable, at least on a first listen, culminating in the longest song on the album, the mostly-instrumental "European Son," which is also one of the worst songs on the album.

I think that it's received such critical acclaim (13 on Rolling Stones Top 500 list) because it received no attention when it came out. I'm not saying that it's not a good album or that others can't like it more than I did (or that I won't like it more one day), I'm just saying that I don't think many people would objectively put this as their 13th favorite album, based on their own subjective tastes.

I've got a 30 minute drive downtown (one way) for a doctor's appointment, another album to listen to, and then a review to write. I'll give everyone a hint: the first name of the guitarist of the band this album comes from is my first name as well.

It's on my desert island list. I do like their double live one "1969". So either that or this if I had to choose one by them. But all of this, except the part about the 4 songs you think are great, is just wrong. Venus in Furs is boring/forgettable ? I am enjoying the thread and your takes, though.

It was basically saying that you're going to post a bunch of opinions about famous music and you don't care what other people think.

But it was also poking fun of the idea that you probably didn't know that the song is probably about someone being ready for sex and having a clean bill of health.

My top 3 lynyrd skynryd is Freebird, Tuesday's Gone and Sweet Home Alabama. They're played out but I'm young enough that they weren't played out for my generation.

Were I to be autistic, which I'm not, that would be extremely insensitive. I'm all fine with people calling others retarded in a joking manner, because no one is likely to be actually mentally challenged on here. But I do know at least one person on here with autism.

I get it, The Beatles are considered the greatest band of all time, and Sgt. Pepper is considered the greatest album of all time. I happen not to like it. I already qualified my opinion with saying that I know hardly anything about music (i.e., how to play instruments, any voice ranges, etc.). I just know whether or not it is pleasurable to the ear for me. And Sgt. Pepper, by and large, is not.

Go smoke another cigarette. You seem extra cranky today.

A quick trip to the politics forum will change your mind on that one.

The Beatles: 4/5 stars. (I am reviewing the album commonly referred to as "The White Album.")

I've been listening to this album everyday for the past four or five days. I've heard each song at least 3 to 4 times, so I have a good feel of each. I did this because a lot of songs with this album take multiple listens to understand and reach a verdict on.

At times, I have slightly mixed feelings about this album, but as a whole piece of work, I'll take the good and the bad with this album and admit that I really enjoy it.

Here's what I liked about this album- unlike seemingly everything else released at the time, this album has specific songs that are disjointed from the rest of the album. While I enjoy a concept album ("The Wall") just as much as the next guy, there is something to be said for an album that lets you listen to each song on its own. And their foray into so many different genres, some genres with success; others, not so much- well, it was an admirable decision to try, in my opinion.

I will definitely agree that this should have been a single album. The only songs I'd keep off of Sides 3 and 4 are "Sexy Sadie," "Revolution 1," and "Savoy Truffle." I'd be willing to keep on "Revolution 9," which I did sort of enjoy in an extremely weird way that I can't describe, but I'd be fine if you cut it and don't view it as essential to The Beatles catalogue. If you keep these three songs, you can cut "Back In The U.S.S.R.," "Wild Honey Pie," and "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?" from the first two sides. There, a single album that might be The Beatles' single best album of all time.

As it is, I will take Sgt. Pepper (4/5 stars) over this one. I like some songs on here more than some on Sgt. Pepper, but I do have to knock it for not being succinct and compact enough.

I'll now list my 5 favorite songs off The White Album:

5. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
4. Blackbird
3. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
2. Martha My Dear
1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Some notes about my top 5... "Piggies" and "Revolution 1" were near misses. I was shocked to read that "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" has been critically maligned (and the sheer amount of contempt people have for it). I love the song and while yes, it's corny, it epitomizes the "don't worry, be happy" from earlier Beatles work- but with even better production. It's also catchy as hell. I love it.

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" slides into my top 3 Beatles songs, after "A Day In The Life" (second favorite) and "With A Little Help From My Friends" (my favorite). All three would likely land in my top 100 songs of all time, regardless of genre.

In a weird sort of way, I sympathize, or at least identify, with this album. I don't think I'm a genius or anything, but in a lot of my work in life, I put out everything that I'm thinking, without editing or trimming it for succinctness. It's something I've got to improve.
