for clarification we are the browns with colt mccoy playing with what we had on the field this year do to injuries . that is the point i was making .

once we lose KC the rebuild is again in force and most likely we will take a step or 2 back

We are the Redskins.. our ability to change direction at the drop of a hat puts a dog in a park full of squirrels to shame.

i put the challenge out and to his credit he was one of the few who had the balls to put the names out and take the heat

the rest were cowards because they couldnt put a name out and defend it , they played dodge , deflect and evasion

i dont think AJ and mcgloin had a prayer at being as good as KC but at least he had the sack to put them out there

I wont say that AJ or McGloin are doomed.

I will say that the instant gratification that our owner and a portion of the fan base seem to crave, is directly opposite to what this team needs at the moment.

If we draft one of these rookies, I give it about a 2% chance we will do as @Stymietee advocates and have him sit and learn.

If we bring in a rookie and he starts, and the team finishes worse, Gruden is gone.

If we bring in one of these seasoned bench warmers, possibly the same result.

While i dont think its Kirk or die, I do think that despite the money it will cost. Building around Kirk is the best long term solution. But that does not bode well for the instant gratification crowd.

It appears that the Redskins may have to move on from Kirk Cousins, who has been their starting quarterback for the last three years. The team may not be willing to pay what it will take to keep him in Washington and even if they wanted to pay Cousins, the quarterback may prefer to have his paychecks coming from a different organization.

This development should not be a surprise for the Redskins. They have known that it could happen ever since at least early 2016 when they put the franchise tag on Cousins rather than working out a long-term contract with him.

In fact, the Redskins have been facing quarterback instability for longer than that. When Jay Gruden came in as head coach in 2015, it was apparent that Robert Griffin III was not going to be the answer. That year Griffin shared the job with Cousins and Colt McCoy. Cousins was not efficient as the team lost all four games that he started and finished before being benched at halftime. McCoy took over for Cousins but he went out with a neck injury after three starts.

MORE REDSKINS: A CLEAN SLATE AT QB?

Going into the 2015 draft, the Redskins had all three of their quarterbacks under contract for just one more season. They made 10 picks but they took no quarterbacks.

When the 2016 draft rolled around Griffin was gone, Cousins had signed his franchise tag tender, and McCoy had signed a three-year contract extension. They had seven picks and from the third round out they bypassed Jacoby Brissett, Dak Prescott, and Cardale Jones and waited until the sixth round to take Nate Sudfeld, a project out of Indiana.

Last year, Cousins again was on the tag and McCoy was still under contract. They obviously were not highly impressed with what they had seen out of Sudfeld in practice the previous year as they cut him at the end of camp. They had 10 picks in the draft and they did not take a quarterback.

After they let Sudfeld go he immediately signed with the Eagles practice squad. The Redskins did not pick up a third quarterback—perhaps a guy like Case Keenum, who was cheap and available during March—to develop on the 53-man roster. They sort of made an effort to have a third QB on the practice squad. They had Alek Torgersen out of Penn on the practice squad for the first month of the season. After they let him go they signed Joel Stave from Wisconsin, who had been with three teams as an undrafted rookie in 2016. Stave was released two weeks after signing.

For the last 10 weeks of the season, the Redskins opted not to have a young quarterback in the meeting room, helping with the scout team, and soaking up as much knowledge about the NFL in general and about the Redskins offense in particular.

All of this lack of any succession planning at quarterback has left the Redskins in an unenviable spot. If Cousins leaves, the only quarterback with experience in Gruden’s offense is McCoy. He has played in just two games in the past three years, both times in mop-up work. They signed former Miami Hurricanes QB Stephen Morris to a futures contract but he has had only brief stints on the 53-man rosters of three different teams in four years. Per CBA rules, he won’t be able to get any teaching about the offense until the offseason program starts in mid-April.

In short, despite having a shaky situation at the most important position on the field, the Redskins have gone through three drafts and three free agent signing periods without adding anything remotely resembling insurance at quarterback. That may force them to use the franchise tag and pay a lot more than they want to in order to keep Cousins around.

Or they will have to start over with only McCoy on the roster. He can be effective in short stretches but he carries legitimate questions about his durability.

This is what you get when you kick the can down the road as the Redskins have. You either end up with bad choices or the cost of keeping the status quo skyrockets

For better or worse Washington has to crap or get off the pot with Cousins contract. Chances are they will crap all over this but not in the good way.

To be fair I really don't believe that most Redskins fans seek instant gratification - it is a very small portion indeed. Cmon - how many folks who seek immediate success would still be following this team? Get real. They would have jumped ship to some other team by now.

I also - again - believe this in terms of the feelings of the majority of fans (by a longshot) that they truly want to keep Cousins in DC. Don't just assume that this is lost on Snyder. For the first time in a while he is facing diminishing fan support in this area which will (and has) led to less attendance and $$ (not to say that he is poor by any means). Don't just assume that he is looking to get rid of Cousins or put little effort into the process of retaining him (perhaps long term). We will find out relatively soon.

Here's an elementary fact. EVERY successful organization has continuity. Pretty simple business plan. IMO, sign our 30 year old stat machine QB to a 3-5 year fair deal, or move the fuck on.

I really believe if Cousins had beat the Giants in the finale of the 2016 season to make the playoffs he would have gotten the long term deal...however he set the bed and now you guys spend countless days/weeks/months dicussing this topic. I’m with Gruden on this one. Long term deal or move on. You guys need a new topic ;-)

I agree, completely!!!

Just one small correction if you don't mind, we've spent years (since 2015) discussing this topic. We could in theory talk about shoes and someone will mention one of the key, set them off words, (Kirk or Cousins) and we return back to topic. Thus is the life of a Washington football supporter/fan. {SIGH}

Damn our front office members eyes!! They did this to us!

BTW: In case I missed doing this earlier....Welcome to the board!!

Can you imagine if the Bullets somehow get DeMarcus Cousins. That trigger word will haunt you guys for many more years.

So true, especially if we get the guy depicted in @Sharkinva's post above and he doesn't work out to be better than DeMarcus's namesake!

Oh I make no bones about it. IF we bring in a new QB, we better win the Division and at least have a shot at the NFC title game or I will be the most annoying I told you so asshole this side of MARS. As has been the habit around here, I will dissects the new saviors every snap pointing out his short comings and minimizing adnauseum any and all possible positives.

And all the while I will maintain my innocence that I don't have a gripe about the new guy, he just is missing something in my book. :thumb:

@Stymietee For the record, should we resign Kirk, I expect no less than a convincing division title, and a real shot at the NFC Title game.

So the only difference is.... no dissection, no I told you so. :suds:

I expect this team to meet it's usual 6.5 year average of 10 wins or better in 2018 with or without Kirk. Unfortunately, that, gets Bruce Allen reason to say, "I told you so" to Snyder, and keep his job(s) followed by the inevitable 6.5 year drop-off after that.

You'll love that....another RGIII 2012 repeat. :D
