In the long term, that IS what it is going to take though. Humans can't outlive the Sun dying without finding another planet, but we will need to figure out how to manipulate our biosphere in the meantime to counter the negative effects.

We've done this on smaller levels - nursing rivers and forests back to health. No reason we can't do this on a global scale, though getting countries and institutions to all agree will be the hardest part.
