yeah, it's safe to say Schilling's lack of support so far is because he's a douche. Career wise, they're pretty equal IMO.

I have Schilling well above Mussina... Mostly thanks to his post season, where he is one of the greatest of all time...

I will be very disappointed with the voters if Mussina makes it and schilling doesn't... I will be more upset if Santana is a one and out...

and I hate Schilling, and love mussina...
My prediction for the coming years:

2018:
Hoffman, Vlad, Chipper, and Thome

2019:
Halladay, Rivera, Edgar

2020:
Jeter, Vizquel

2021:
Bonds, Clemens, Mussina

With McGwire already out, I am convinced that they will wait until veterans committee to get the steroid big guns in... The Bonds,Clemens,McGwire, ARod...

the other questionable Steroid guys may get in later... but those 4 have to get in first... Will be weird, even though it SHOULD happen, for Bonds and Clemens to get in when McGwire was pretty much thrown out right away... even if Bonds and Clemens are 2 of the best players of all time...

But McGwire never really got any real support. He never even cracked 24% before falling down to 12.3% in his final year. Barry saw his votes go from 36.8% in 2015 to 53.8%. Clemens has also seen a similar surge, going from 37.5% in 2015 to 54.1% in 2017. I think Bonds and Clemens will make it within the next few years.

I think Bonds and Clemens get in. Their vote totals have gone up 17% over the last two years, and they have 5 years left.

2021 seems perfect to me. The HOF crowded ballot might actually be a problem that works itself out. 2019, 2020, and 2021 don't have many HOFers, and the ones that are, I predict will be first ballot. 2019 with Halladay/Rivera and 2020 with Jeter. 2021 doesn't have any additional HOFers, and I think the voters are going to agree. Just based on my predictions, I think we go into 2021 with the following players on the ballot.

Bonds (9th year)
Clemens (9th)
Schilling (9th)
Mussina (8th)
Rolen (4th)
Ramirez (5th)
A. Jones (4th)
Helton (3rd)
Santana (4th)

I don't think the writers are voting in Santana, and I don't think Rolen, Andruw Jones, and Helton will have been discussed enough to get in just yet. So I think the 3 players with the most momentum will be the ones who get it that year and that's Bonds, Clemens, and Mussina.

If I'm wrong, then I think 2021 will be a no-admission year.

thing about Bonds and Clemens, they are so good that there is no question whether they should be in or not... so the only reason for them not to be in is steroids... Point is, that the same people are going to always vote them in... you need some of the steroid is bad people to come to the other side, and the one thing we do know about HOF voters are that they are old-school and very stubborn... the weaker the class should have no affect on that...

Edgar Martinez deserves to be elected into the Hall of Fame

I feel like Edgar's 3rd base seasons (1990-1992) get overlooked a lot. He rates as a fine defender (+18 runs as a 3B) and he had some really good offensive years at 3rd, including 1992 where he batted .343/.404/.544 (164 OPS+). He was top 10 in WAR those three years before going on to be one of the best hitters in baseball from 95-01 (2nd in RAA behind only Barry and third in wRC+ behind Bonds and McGwire).

But Bonds and Clemens received 86.7% on new ballots cast last year. Plus, they each netted an extra 27 votes last year from returning voters who changed their mind. Only way they don't get in is if 115-120 voters refuse to vote for them, and are still voting in 2021.

I think new voters are going to be more accepting of the steroid era players. Keith Law's first year voting will be next year. I would think there would be an influx of these kind of voters soon.

How do names like Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome, Scott Rolen, Edgar Martinez, Mark McGwire, Omar Vizquel, Derek Jeter and Sammy Sosa come up as Hall of Fame candidates, when Lou Whitaker (who had a greater WAR than any of them) only got 2.9% of the vote his first year.

Lou Whitaker (74.9 WAR)
Jim Thome (72.9 WAR)
Derek Jeter (71.8)
Alan Trammell (70.4)
Scott Rolen (70.0)
Edgar Martinez (68.3)
Mark McGwire (62.0)
Vladimir Guerrero (59.3)
Sammy Sosa (58.4)
Omar Vizquel (45.3)

Not sure if you are being serious.
I am. I mean, I loved him. He was great, but was done by 33. Solid every season. Couple years of leading the league in ERA, couple others in Innings, a couple in SOs. 2 CYs. But, he was done at 33. Didn't even get to 150 wins. He needed a longer stretch of peak years, IMO.

I'd be surprised if he lasted more than 1 year.

Modern day pitchers don't often last long. So how important should longevity be??
And he was the Best lefty of his era and the 2nd best pitcher next to Roy halladay.
