What do we have to look forward to on this one guys?

Cliff Avril's career appears to be in jeopardy. I guess we get some needed rest for Sherman/Prosise and hopefully the OLINE gets a good week to review some things to work on. Seattle coaches have gotta be thinking about the running game with Carson seemingly done for the year.

Not gonna lie, I'm not upset the least about Odell being out for the year with Seattle's next game being Giants on the road. They are playing terrible football at the moment, hopefully they don't figure it out in 2 weeks.

On Avril this is gonna sound super shitty, but he chose the right year to go down. His dead cap next year is $500K but had a $7.5M cap hit and was hitting 32 age wise. Now is the right time to let him go. That said, I'd rather this guy retire and enjoy the millions he made and a Super Bowl ring. No reason to go back out there and get yourself killed.

Great Seahawk. Amazing what we gave up to steal him from the Lions.

I agree completely if I knew Avril I would tell him man I think its time to move on to better things you have made your millions won a world championship there is no need to put your health on the line.

As far as the team goes after the bye the Giants I heard will be without Odell AND Marshall which would be good for us its crazy how during the offseason when the giants signed Marshall that they would be a top passing attack this season. After the giants game the home game against the Texans that team will be without JJ Watt which is good news for our Oline can you imagine what JJ Watt would do to Rees Odhiambo?

Good time for a bye.

Bennett gets time to recover
Procise gets time to get healthy
Ol gets time to learn how to be offensive linemen

And a easy stretch before Altanta.

At Giants
Vs Houston
Vs Washington
At Arizona

Our first two opponents out of the bye got a lot weaker with season ending injuries to OBJ and Watt. Houston lost another DL starter in that game as well.

I would be surprised if this is the end of Avril's career. He may be thinking about it, but so did ET when emotions were running high after his leg injury. I wouldn't expect Avril to put his long term health needlessly at risk, but if the docs tell him there is no heightened chance of severe injury then I suspect he'll be back on the field doing what he loves to do. The good news is the future with Frank Clark taking on an expanded role looks pretty damn bright from here.

I haven't heard much about Bennett, so hopefully that is good news & we'll see him and Prosise on the field vs NYG.

Earlier today on 710 they said we are working out Branden Albert. If he were a world beater then he wouldn't be sitting out there on the street, but at 32 he probably still has something left in the tank. Taking a look at a guy who has played at a reasonably high level at a position of weakness can't be a bad thing.

Looks like Luke Joeckel is having some minor surgery (if there is such a thing) on his knee during the bye and status for the Giants game is uncertain. I wonder if this tire kicking on Albert (played G in college I believe) is being done with Joeckel's surgery in mind. Not sure you bring him in to start, but if Joeckel misses a game or 2 then adding a guy for depth is probably prudent.

My least favorite game of every year (@ Rams) is behind us with a WIN and now we go into the bye...really looking forward to sitting my duff on the couch on Sunday and watching the games with not a worry in the world about the results.

I hope the Avril injury isn't too bad, but it doesn't look pretty. Part of the lethality of this defense is the ability to rush Avril and Clark on the edges and Bennett inside. Would be a big blow to the defense if we can't replace him. On the bright side I saw a Seattle Times article saying there's a chance we could see Malik McDowell this year.

If Avril does have serious neurological issues, I wish him the best. Would be a tragic for a great career to be cut short like that. Many are saying it could be career ending. His sack totals don't reflect the amount of devastation he has inflicted as an edge rusher over the duration of his career.

Not putting you on the spot but any chance you can link the article on the McDowell injury? I was super high on this kid, so looking for any news at this point.

Yeah, no problem buddy. Here ya go:

Seahawks rookie Malik McDowell could return this season from ‘really bad concussion’ suffered in ATV accident

Only reason I saw this was because I started to write; "and no news on McDowell," so I did a Google Search and found this. If it's behind a pay block for you, I'll screenshot it and post it here so you can see it.

Mmm pretty conflicted about this. I'd love the talent on the field but there's nothing in that article that leads me to believe McDowell is going to be 100% healthy this season.

Honestly at this point I'm just praying we got him 100% for next season. I wouldn't rush him back, especially with Richardson seemingly dominating the interior line. Sucks Avril is out, but that's what we drafted Clark for to begin with. IMO Clark is an upgrade over Avril at this point.

Thanks for the link though @seahawksfan234

Good time for the bye week to get guys healthy and for the o-line to keep studying the film to get better. Lots of confidence going into the Giants game as they could be down their top 3 wr's plus they'll probably be coming off a bad loss in Denver this weekend. Giants look like dog shit on fire and Eli looks like he's ready to retire.

I think they would have him on the IR if they didn't expect him back. If McDowell's injury was possibly career ending, we probably would've known by now. It seems just like a bad concussion + something else maybe.

Agreed on Richardson. People aren't talking about how great he has been. It's mostly sad because the Avril, Bennett, Clark, Richardson rush had so much potential that may never be seen. I just see Avril as a much more rounded player than Clark though, that's why he gets more snaps. Clark has had serious flashes but is frequently easily baited by play action and somewhat penalty prone. Great talent though. I think he hasn't hit his ceiling yet. I just wish that the Hawks had another serious pass rush threat. Was nice being able to utilize Bennett inside, now he will likely need to stay on the edge most downs.

I think people are beginning to figure the lawfirm of Baldwin and Wilson. So Richardson is becoming more productive because of this

Jordan will be back soon also most likely a week after the Giants game. That's another DE to help. Shead coming back and Lane. Maybe the pass defense improves, i would hope so. I think if they get Rawls going 100% he will improve the running game he is just someone that needs time and to knock the rust off. Another week for Richardson makes him better. Sheldon has slowly improved every week as he gets more comfortable with the playbook and people around him and I fully expect that to continue.

I'm not the least bit surprised that they're working out at least one offensive lineman during the bye week. I like that they're being proactive about it. They have time to get a guy in there, get him acclimated and get the offense on the same page before their next game, so why not take the opportunity to see what their options are. With NYG looking like a mess and Houston losing both Watt and Mercilus for the season tonight, the Hawks have a chance to get some momentum rolling as they approach midseason. Early bye weeks aren't ideal, but in this case, it could come in handy.

The Avril injury is still a scary one. Nerve damage and loss of feeling in the extremities is always tough because, even if/when the damage heals and all feeling is restored, there's still that risk that one hit in the wrong place or one bad landing could cause the numbness to come back or be even worse than before. In other words, it's a career-threatening injury even if he comes back relatively soon because of how easily it can resurface now. I hope he comes back eventually and is able to play out the rest of his career and retire on his own terms.

As far as McDowell goes, I'm not holding out any hope that he'll be back this year. The last word I read on him was that he had career threatening facial injuries, which most likely came with a concussion of some degree or another. Concussions, like nerve injuries, are not something you mess with. If he sits out the entire season, he sits out the entire season. I'd rather see him come into camp at 100% next year if it's between that and having him come back this year having spent however much of it not doing anything football related and potentially getting hurt in another way because he's not in game shape.

I always thought Clark was Bennett's replacement not Avrils seeing as Bennett is older and has been more of a distraction. Not to mention the Hawks moved Bennett over to the right side ( defenses left ) and played Clark in Bennetts spot against the Rams. Maybe it was Bennett saying he didn't want to face the Rams best blocker.

Ryan is the oldest player on the team then Michael Bennett then Cliff Avril, but shockingly only 5 players on the Hawks are 30 years of age or older. the other two i didn't list are Graham and Wilhoite. Seattle is still the 13th YOUNGEST team in the NFL at 25.83 years of age and only 0.35 away from being #3. Just removing Ryan from that makes Seattle drop to #2-3 in the NFL, Ryan turns 36 in a little over a month.

Wait what? Bennett has always played the LDE position (against the right tackle) when he's not lined up in the DT formation.

We used to run Clemons @ the RDE, Avril LDE and Bennett DT on passing downs like 4-5 years ago, but Bennett was always on the left side of our defense (against the RG/RT).

Hmm it seemed flipped. I swear Avril rushed from the LDE spot on 3rd downs 90% of the time and Bennett would either move inside or to RDE. That was not the case against the Rams.

almost every rush is from over the RT/RG only a few are from the other side. I KNEW i had seen him more on the LDE side lol.

Here is some for his whole career and again 90% of the time he is rushing over the Right tackle.

You got a couple plays there where Bennett is on the RDE position (we move him around a ton granted) but most of those plays where Avril is rushing from the LDE spot is when Bennett moves to DT. And of course no arguments there, the tradition has been to push Avril to the LDE spot and rush Clark or Clemons (in the past) from the RDE spot.

Guess what I meant by my post is on non-3rd downs or non passing situations Bennett is usually our LDE.

On your second link Bennett doesn't seem to be in a lot of those plays.

Again not saying you're wrong, Avril does plenty of action in the LDE spot, but usually when Bennett is shifted to DT or not in the formation/play at all. That's why I was saying I pictured Clark as a replacement for Avril, not Bennett. McDowell IMO was a replacement for Bennett.

So just went back and watched a bunch of game clips on youtube and Bennett is like 50/50 between the sides on 1st and 2nd downs but against the rams He hardly EVER went to the blindside which he did a TON every game till the rams game. Which BTW was over Whitworth the Rams best offensive lineman.

Clark out played him going against a much better blocker.

So my question is valid, Why did he avoid the LT? LOL he's a pussy and is all about his own stats not a team player.

Give me Avril every day of the week over Bennett and also give me Clark over him. Hope Avril's career is not over. Best DE on this team and a true TEAM PLAYER!
