Tanaka is opting out. He knows 100% that he can beat 3/$67 million on the open market.

Yeah, I agree. It was more in doubt at the start of the year when he was terrible, but he's straightened it out since then. How do the Yankees fill that slot? Re-up with Tanaka? Darvish? Arietta?

Please no on Darvish

Maybe no on Arrietta

If they're smart (and annoyingly they seem to be) none of the above. Try to get Sabathia back on a team-friendly short deal.

My guess is Tanaka gets 5/100 somewhere. I thought Houston but maybe not now that they have the Verlander contract.

Yankee approach will be interesting

A good riddance?

Or a "we will tack on a year" type of thing

HA! Same projection on this end. I can see Tanaka of interest to several teams: Dodgers, Seattle, Cubs, Rangers, Cardinals to name a few....

I'm not sure how smart it is to go into 2018 with a rotation of Severino, Gray, Montgomery, Sabathia & ________. They need to replace Tanaka with another #2/#3 type if they plan to keep improving.

I wouldn't do it with either of those 3 guys though

You really have to look around....None of the contending teams is carrying much better than that, especially with that sort of pen supporting it

Yeah, hard to be excited about that free agent crop. Who's in the next tier? Lance Lynn? Alex Cobb? I'm not sure you replace Tanaka with those guys and improve???? Maybe they will deal some prospects for another starter. I could see that, too.

I like Lynn or Cobb better than Darvish and Arrietta, especially at a reduced price, and especially since Cobb is AL East tested

The demand for those 2 could be pretty huge

Love the bullpen with Robertson, Betances and Chapman. That's a terror for the other team in a short series. The Red Sox have their bullpen as a strength for the first time in years, as well. It makes a huge difference and the bullpen seems to matter more and more every year. I don't think losing Tanaka is a killer for the Yanks, but they need to replace him with something solid(especially if Severino and/or Montgomery regress).

I like Cobb, too. He always seems to give the Red Sox trouble! Wouldn't mind having him on a reasonable deal, but I think you are right that everyone will want to take a shot on a guy like that as a bargain.

Here is something to watch....very Very strong indications they will trade Betances to a team that needs a closer, so a mid rotation starter may be had that way

He had a rough go with the organization in arbitration, he's been bitching about Girardi's use of him, and he's been shaky at best

And I kinda like guys that have their surgeries behind them, rather than in front of them

These days, with Severino averaging the highest fastball velocity in baseball, is there any doubt he will need surgery at some point?

Seems like a lock with these guys these days

I could absolutely see that. But hasn't he had issues as a closer in the past? The Yankees are in a good spot to trade for whatever they need, basically. That's a nice spot to be in.
