Sunday 7/16

Every MiLB team that played won tonight, all 4 road teams winning in the 9th.

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats (AAA) WON 14-11, scoring 3 in the 9th.

Orlando Calixte 2-6, 2 HR (13), 3 RBI, 2 R, 1 K. I suspect he's the guy called upon if Nunez gets dealt.
Wynton Bernard 3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (8).
Jarrett Parker 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 PO.
Chris Shaw 2-4, 2B, 2 BB, 3 R, 1 K. The lone guy NOT to have an RBI.
Carlos Moncrief 3-6, HR (2), 2 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R, 1 K.
Juniel Querecuto 4-6, 2B, 1 RBI, 3 R.
Ryan Lollis 3-6, 2 2B, 1 RBI.

Jose Flores 4.0-6-4-4-2-4
Dusten Knight 2.0-3-3-3-4-1
Collin Balester 1.0-1-1-1-1-1
D.J. Snelten 1.0-2-3-1-1-0. Despite this poor outing, still my guess as the lefty we get the most out of in the minors. He's just putting up stoopid numbers.
Derek Law 1.0-1-0-0-1-1. I had almost forgotten about Law. Still hasn't been great, WHIP at 1.64, BAA .293.

Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) WON 6-2

C.J Hinojosa 1-4, 1 R. I want to highlight C.J here. He's quietly having a great year. Started off injured so he lost some steam, but he's put up a .300/.365/.396 line in 57 games now. He's walked more than he's struck out (21/18), and he plays great defense at SS, 3B and 2B. He's shown fantastic strides in 1 year. In 2016 (after tearing through the Cal League) he played 57 games in AA (exactly as many as today). Over the year, he's increased his walk rate, lowered his K rate, and has shown overall growth. He has fringy power at best, and seems to have even sacrificed some pop for contact. But that plays into his utility player profile. There's a chance he's promoted to AAA before the end of the year. In the bigs, he projects as a good defender at 3 positions, with a chance to be a platoon guy against lefties.
Jerry Sands 1-4, 3B, 2 RBI, 1 R

Nate Reed 7.0-8-2-2-1-4
Seth Rosin 1.0-0-0-0-1-2
Carlos Alvarado 1.0-0-0-0-0-0

San Jose Giants
(A+) WON 5-4 scoring 4 in the 9th.

Steven Duggar 1-4, 1 K. Good to see Duggar back (again). If he's healthy, should only have to spend a short time in San Jose before he's off to AAA. This could be a big 2 months for him.
Ryan Howard 2-5, 1 K. Why oh why is he still in SJ.

Mike Connolly 5.0-10-4-4-1-3
Michael Cederoth 0.0-0-0-0-1-0
Heath Slatton 2.0-2-0-0-0-1
Will LaMarche 1.0-1-0-0-0-1
Dylan Rheault 1.0-2-0-0-0-1

Augusta GreenJackets (A) WON 10-9 scoring 4 in the 9th.

Jacob Heyward 2-4, HR (10), 2B, 5 RBI, 1 R, 1 K.
Kelvin Beltre 1-2, 2 BB, 3 R, 1 K.
Skyler Ewing 2-4, 1 BB, 1 R. Ewing is quietly putting together a really nice season. Was a catcher at Rice, drafted as a 1st baseman, converted back to catcher this year, he has a .262/.371/.471 batting line. This is basically his 3rd year in Augusta though so don't expect much really.

Stephen Woods 1.1-3-5-5-3-0
Jose Morel 2.2-4-2-2-1-3
Jeff Burke 2.1-3-1-1-1-1
Caleb Smith 1.2-1-0-0-2-0
Patrick Ruotolo 1.0-2-1-1-0-2

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (A-) WON 10-9 scoring 1 in the 9th.

Malique Ziegler 2-5, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 SB (13), 1 K. My guy. Excited for this kid.
Gustavo Cabrera 2-5, HR (3-game winning in the 9th), 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K. Cabrera batting a robust .282/.333/.615. Get hype?

Garrett Cave 1.0-0-0-0-0-2

Salem-Keizer vs. Spokane - July 16, 2017 | MiLB.com Box | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

DSL Giants (Rookie) were off (All-Star break)

Alexander Canario won MVP of the All-Star game, singling, stealing a base, and scoring the winning run.
Marco Gonzalez was the other rep for the Giants.

AZL Giants (Rookie) WON 6-2

Aaron Bond 1-3, HR (3), 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K.
Heliot Ramos 1 -4, 1 K, 1 CS (1).

I heard (on KNBR??) that the Giants are trying a different strategy this year with their player placement. They are holding them back a bit more to pump their numbers. In the past they have promoted rather aggressively to get them ready for the bigs, which led to the Giants prospects being rated lower by the national media due to more pedestrian numbers.

I don't know how accurate this is, though. I have not done any analysis to prove or disprove it. In fact, I think it is too early to make that claim for this year. But the co cent is interesting, whether it is factual or not that the Giants have made a shift.

Idk, scouts only take numbers into account so much. I can flip it and say "why is this guy who's hitting .325 in A+ still in A+? He should be promoted, there's nothing for him there". And scouts (I hope) don't look at the national media's opinions. Frankly, after like the top 20-30 guys, consensus goes out the window and it becomes a cluster.

As for the Giants, they've overall been pretty aggressive with their dudes, and I haven't seen much change this year.

Side note: I think that they have TOO many players and not enough space. They could use an extra farm team, another AZL team maybe. It would take a couple of years, but you would see the Giants slow down promotions at that point maybe.

Cody Hall 1.0-0-0-0-0-2
Jarret Martin 1.0-1-0-0-0-1

San Jose Giants
(A+) lost 4-2

Ryan Howard 2-4, HR (7), 2 RBI, 1 R. Up to .327/.360/.415. I hadn't really taken a deeper look at Howard's numbers until today, and we might want to pump the breaks on the "Duffy clone" comps. His K/BB rate is not great, Duffy always had a nice K/BB rate in the minors. Howard has just about no power, 17 XBH in 376 PA's. That's bad. Duffy was showing improvements in that department, Howard's has gotten worse this year. Defensively we'll see. Howard is supposed to be good, but Duffy was pretty elite. We'll see.
Bryan Reynolds 2-3, 3B, BB, SB (2). Reynolds showing off the speed game today.

Mark Reyes 6.0-5-3-2-2-3
Matt Solter 2.0-4-1-1-0-2

Augusta GreenJackets (A) lost 12-3

Sandro Fabian 1-4, HR (6), 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 K.

Pitching? Nah

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (A-) lost 2-1

Orlando Garcia 2-3, 1 BB.
Gustavo Cabrera 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K.
Malique Ziegler 1-5, 2B, 1 SB (14)

Matt Lujan 5.0-2-1-1-1-4. Rehabbing.
Logan Webb 2.0-3-1-1-1-4. Coming back from Tommy John.
Jason Bahr 1.0-0-0-0-0-2. 5th round draft pick.

DSL Giants (Rookie) was suspended (Rain-completed today)

AZL Giants (Rookie) WON 12-7

Saw the scoring, thinking I was gonna see some highlights from Ramos and Gonzalez!..... Nope, both had the day off. Jack Conlon probably gets assigned to the AZL once he's official, which would make 18 teenagers on this roster. Holy cow. Giants seriously need another AZL team team get all these players ABs.

Steven Duggar 2-4, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 1 R. He should be in AAA any day now. I've said it a hundred times, could be a huge 2 months for him. And seeing Shaw and Duggar patrol the same outfield will be an interesting glimpse at a possible future.

Probably a big "if"...but what if Belt gets traded? Does Shaw go back to first? I'm having a hard time thinking of anyone else the Giants have who might fill the hole. Although I guess Jones does have SOME experience at first.

Probably a combination of Jones and Posey.

Shaw was moved to LF for 2 reasons. 1, there wasn't a clear future for him at 1st with Belt locked in and Posey probably Belt's successor. More importantly 2, Shaw just wasn't very good at 1st. He wasn't picking it up as well as they hoped, had a lot of trouble with his footwork around the bag. From what I've heard, Shaw made their decision rather easy to transition.

Even if Belt does get dealt though I don't think Shaw will be up this year, unless the Giants plan to anoint him as the LF/1B next year and the Giants rarely do that with prized prospects. Only time in recent memory I recall it was Posey and Bumgarner in 2009, and the Giants STILL made them earn it a little bit before calling them up for good in 2010 (Molina and Wellmeyer were absolutely not going to stop the Giants from making the move, just made it seem like they had to earn it).

Giants can save Shaw's 40-man roster spot until he's truly ready. That could be this year, my bet is on next year, plenty of other guys to test out in the mean time.

I have not heard anything, and I don't think he has ever played there, but Parker LOOKS like a 1B. And his OF defense is nothing to protect. I wouldn't be against trying him there.

Wednesday 7/19

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats (AAA) WON 3-1

Wynton Bernard 2-4, HR (1), 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 K, 1 PO.

Tyler Beede 7.0-5-1-0-1-5. Very strong start for Beede, threw 109 pitches and 78 for strikes. Got strike one on 20 of the 26 batters, induced 11 groundouts and 2 DPs. Probably his best start of the season. For those so inclined, here's video of Beede's 7th inning. You see everything in play: his sinker, 4-seam, cutter, curve and changeup

Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) lost 8-6

C.J Hinojosa 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 R. Blasted a ball off the wall in LF.... and was thrown out at 2nd. But that's okay. Since June 2nd, he's hitting .349/.395/.497 with a 145 wRC+, .396 wOBA, 0.92 BB/K ratio. Stay hot
Myles Schroder 2-3, HR (3), 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB.

Dan Slania 6.0-7-5-5-2-1. Started off bad, giving up 5 in the first 2 innings, but settled in after that. Still projects best out of the bullpen
Ryan Halstead 0.2-1-0-0-1-1
Jarret Martin 0.2-1-2-2-2-1
Seth Rosin 0.2-2-1-1-0-1

San Jose Giants (A+) were off

:fish2:

Augusta GreenJackets (A) lost 3-1

No offense

Garrett Williams 6.1-7-3-2-1-6. Probably too advanced for Augusta. Had 17 straight scoreless innings broken in the 2nd inning. The Giants decided to push fellow pure stuff, iffy control lefty Matt Krook to San Jose, but held Williams back because of injury. I expect they'll push Williams soon.
Jose Morel 2.2-1-0-0-0-2

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (A-) WON 3-2

Malique Ziegler 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K.
Bryce Johnson 2-5, 1 R, 3 SB (8), 1 CS (5), 1 K. Okay, so Johnson was our 6th round pick out of this draft, and he was heralded as a pure speed, excellent defensive guy in CF, so why is he playing LF? Well, that's how good Ziegler is out there. Nothing against Johnson. This is why I'm so big on Malique, dude is a STUD.
Orlando Garcia 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 K. Just another 2-hit day at the office for the 15th rounder

Jose Marte 5.0-3-1-1-1-5
Aaron Phillips 1.0-0-0-0-1-3
Connor Kaden 2.0-1-0-0-0-3
Garrett Cave 1.0-0-1-1-2-3. Also had 3 wild pitches... effectively wild for the 2017 4th rounder?

DSL Giants (Rookie) lost 4-3

So looking back on my DSL outlook, I pegged young Alexander Canario as a guy that might be someone worth looking out for. So far he's hitting a robust .304/.417/.536 with 5 homers and 17 XBH, 22 walks to 20 Ks and even 12 steals. He's pretty much checking all the boxes you want from the DSL; walk rate, strikeout/walk, and power. He was named MVP of the DSL All-Star game too.

Another impressive kid that I did not name has been Franklin Labour.

Now, I also pegged Anyesber Sivira and he has not faired nearly half as good. But, he does have a nice walk rate and K/BB ratio.

Some bad news. Frankie Tostado, 19th round draft pick, under went Tommy John. He's an outfielder, should be ready to go for the 2018 season.

San Jose Giants (A+) WON 12-7

D.J. Myers 3.0-7-6-1-0-2

Adon also made this SWEET play:

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (A-) lost 8-3

Gustavo Cabrera 2-4, 2 RBI. Batting .304/.360/.587 now. After all that he's been through, the dude is still just 21 years old. Hard not to root for him.

Alex Bostic 1.2-1-1-0-0-0
Tyler Schimpf 0.2-1-3-2-3-1

I'll post the final tomorrow if they complete it.

AZL Giants (Rookie) lost 8-2

Heliot Ramos 1-4, 2B, 1 R, 1 K. Ramos has a 10-game hitting streak an his average has been going down, that's how great of a start he's had. You can see signs of a struggle though: last 7 games 10 K's (no walks), 9 hits.
