This from CBS:

The Yankees have secured free-agent deals with big-hitting catcher Brian McCann ($85 million) and slick-fielding backup infielder Brendan Ryan (about $2 million), but the Bronx Bombers are hardly stopping there.
They are currently engaged with free agents Carlos Beltran, Jacoby Ellsbury, Shin-Soo Choo, Stephen Drew and Hiroki Kuroda while eying Joe Nathan and top pitching target Masahiro Tanaka. They are also pressing their own star, Robinson Cano, for a meeting soon to figure out whether there's something to talk about.

And, they still plan to be under $189m....

Yeah, why do they care about the luxury tax? They are being frugal for the sake of it if they actually care about that number. Making a profit over winning.

I could understand if they actually had a rebuild from within plan through the draft, then yea no reason to break the bank, but they never operate like that.

Because they paid about $30 million in luxury tax in 2013, and that was with attendance being the lowest it's been since 2001.

When they were averaging 4 million plus fans a season like they were a couple years ago, it's quite easy to brush that off and just eat the fee....but not so much when attendance is down 25% from that period.

That stadium isn't paying for itself. It was a bit of Yankee hubris to assume fans would cough up the money for the field level seats, all while paying $40+ for parking and $12.50 for a beer. They sold rights to the YES network. Either Hank is more concerned with pinching pennies and the bottom line or the Yanks bottomless pit of money isn't quite as bottomless as we all thought. This offseason could tell a lot.

Plus, for each year they go over, the percentage paid goes up. I think they will have to pay 40% of the amount over $189 next year... If they get under, the sliding scale resets.
