slightly freak accident last night
WASHINGTON — Edmonton Oilers centre Sam Gagner will have his left hand examined by a specialist here Thursday after it was sliced open by a skate blade while he was sitting on the bench during the opening period of Wednesday’s 5-0 loss to the Washington Capitals.
“I had a drink of water, my glove was off and a skate came up and clipped me ... somebody hopping on and off. I don’t know who it was,” said Gagner, who had the side of his left hand stitched before returning to play.
The specialist will look over the 21-year-old centre to make sure there isn’t any tendon damage.
“It was enough of a nick to be bleeding for a long while,” said Gagner. “That’s why I took so long to get it fixed. Hopefully, it’s OK when they do some exploratory work.”
Gagner came back to play because he could hold his stick, but while the team flew to Detroit to prepare for a Friday night game against the Red Wings, he stayed in Washington.
“They have to open it up, take the stitches out to look at the tendons. Hopefully, they don’t find anything, nothing ruptured” said Gagner.
It’s the second time this season that Gagner has been cut, both times on the left hand. The other one was more in the wrist area.
“That wasn’t this deep. That was a skate, too, but it happened on the ice,” said Gagner.
