I'm sure the Bears would love to unload him. Hypothetical deal: Dalton straight up for Cutler. Trading problems, so to speak.

Cutler has a "quarterback guru" for a head coach, and his best buddy Marshall as a WR and he still sucks.

I'll stick with Dalton

On one hand, he's got a cannon for an arm. It would be a nice change to see a gunslinger instead of a dink and dunk QB. He would definitely have weapons on par with or better than he had in Chicago. He would also be playing behind a much, much better offensive line.

On the other hand...that contract.

My thoughts are we would just be trading losers, but it's fun to speculate, especially when we all know there's no chance this would actually happen. Better the devil we know, right?

Early evidence on his "guru" as a head coach is he's found his level of mediocrity, as the Peter principle says we all do. Maybe Trestman would be better suited as an OC or even a QB coach. He's definitely lost the room in Chicago.

Kind of like how Marvin Lewis is a damn fine DC and would probably make a good GM, but can't handle the HC job for shit?

I think the Bengals are comfortable with Dalton's contract, it's very safe for them.

I do think Cutler would do better in this offense than Dalton, but not by much. not sure it matters.

Cutler has better receivers and an actual tight end in Chicago. What would make him do better here?

our OL is an upgrade
He'd do fine with Green and Sanu, he might even have the experience to help Greshem out.
so, that just doesn't matter as much.

I dont know what Daltons guaranteed numbers are in his six year contract. Jay cutler is basically on a 3 year contract for 54 million guaranteed dollars, all the years after the third are options with no more guaranteed money. They deferred 4 million from this years 22, so pretty sure that is just a dead cap hit for the bears, team that trades for him would have 2 years 32 million left. Whoever gets Dalton has 5 years and I believe 93 million left.

I think everyone's hatred/mistrust/disappointment/etc of Dalton has given you blinders to how bad Cutler really is.

Cutler has been behind some really bad OL the past few years.

he's not as bad as Dalton, but it's not that much of a difference.

I think in one way Cutler is much worse. Cutler has elite arm talent, but apparently either a pea brain or zero drive to excel, whereas Dalton is probably getting the most he can out of his limited physical talent.

No.

Just due to the contracts.

Another year of Dalton suckage and he can be cut/traded with nothing against the cap. Cutler on the other hand...not so much.

Not sure of this but on Mike and Mike this morning they were discussing Cutler's contract. I believe he is owed $54 mil in guaranteed money over the next three years. That is certainly as you said much worse than our deal with the ginger.

Maybe a cheeseburger and fries for Cutler. But they would have to eat his contract.
