I think we had an 8 game lead entering September, but it was 10 games in very late August over the Cardinals. We had the worst September record in the NL, the Cards had the best September record in the NL. I don't think we'll ever see dual collapses at the same time like that again.

It's pretty historically significant, especially since the Cardinals went on to win the World Series, but it sucks when your team is one of the ones making that kind of history.
I enjoyed it.

The 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers set the standard for late season collapses.

I know this is not modern day, but the the 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers IMO was the worse collapse of all time. Actually I remember that collapse that year.

That was more a case of the Giants getting red hot. Finished the season on a 37-7 run.

My vote goes to "The Phold". I'd also throw in the 1978 Red Sox (I'd say that was worse than 2011 just because there was a false glimmer of hope until Game 163) and the 1995 Angels in here.

'78 Red Sox collapsed, then picked themselves back up and won 8 straight to force the 1 gamer. For that reason I can't include them.

IMO, it's the '64 Phillies.

I know some of you guys weren't even born yet but :

The 1995 Angels went through statistically the worst late-season collapse in Major League Baseball history.[1] On August 16, they held a 10½-game lead over the Texas Rangers and an 11½-game lead over the Seattle Mariners, but suffered through a late season slump, including a nine-game losing streak from August 25 to September 3

Angels had some great hitters but had black holes at 2B/C and a pretty lousy bench. The offense was great until they stopped scoring in September. Finley/Langston were having very good seasons until they fell apart and they played pretty big roles in the Angels' collapse (the Angels rotation had ERAs of 5.70 and 5.74 the final two months)

I wasn't around back then but I have seen that one referenced so much in tv and movies so much I almost feel like I was there. It's weird how some of these announcers work so hard to get their signature calls for big events but really the most famous of all is "The Giants win the Pennant! The Giants win the Pennant! The Giants win the Pennant! The Giants win the Penant!........."

Mine too. Not only because it allowed the Phillies to finally break through and win the division but because it was in the age of the internet and I was able to see all the Mets writers "counting their chickens" a month before the season ended.

2011 Braves sucked for me. But blowing a 7gm lead with 17 left is truly something only the Muts could pull off

This is what I was gonna post, although I think it was more a fact the Giants just wouldn't lose rather than the Dodgers collapsing.

Fuck Jim Joyce.

Wait, what were we talking about? I get tagged in a baseball thread and my reflexive action kicks in.
