The thing I don't like about the US News list is that it is divided into several lists only: National Universities, National Liberal Arts Colleges, Regional Universities, and Regional Colleges. I like the separate lists, but I wish US News would also make a combined list encompassing all four categories.

This is why I like the annual Forbes list of America's Top Colleges...it combines all the U.S. categories, plus you can filter the Forbes list by state:

Another thing to note about the Forbes list is that you might notice some top schools are missing...as an example, if you filter by state and select Georgia, you'll see Emory (best school in Georgia) is missing.

Emory is missing (as are some other top schools) because the school provided false test score results to the Federal government, so as a penalty, Forbes left them off the list for this year. They will be placed back on the list next year when it is released in the Summer.
