I hate the stupid WHEELER RULE.

Former 3rd round pick in 2007 of the New York Islanders Jason Gregoire has signed a contract with his hometown team the Winnipeg Jets. Gregoire used the Wheeler rule & became a free agent.

Gregoire is a pretty good prospect. He's spent the last three years at North Dakota. He could end up being a 3rd liner & solid penalty killer in the NHL or fizzle. Time will tell.

I'm still trying to figure out if this team is trying to get better at all. They weren't in a rebuilding phase last year, so it seems really odd the way they've handled this preseason.

The Jets braintrust have come out and said that they were going to develop their prospects and build through the draft. It hasn't been a great UFA market and the Jets wisely (in my opinion) didn't go crazy like some other teams. Personally, I like their team and think they'll be in the playoff hunt.

8.6(c)ii:

If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and does not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.

Essentially the "Wheeler Rule" is a loophole because the Isles (in this case) retain his rights for 4 years, but since they didn't issue him a Bona Fide Offer, he's free to walk as of June 1 by selecting to come out early.

theyve got just over 4.5 mill to spend to get to the floor so theyre not done

maybe they could be looking at throwing out an RFA offer to someone
maybe they could be looking at a trade option

theyre in a good position ... fact is they are gonna have to operate at around the floor for a bit before the market becomes established

they didnt blow their brains out on July 1 when EVERYONE overpays ... now, some teams are up against the cap and may have to reluctantly shed salary ... Jets have good talent evaluators so who knows, maybe we see an Ehrhoff for Rahimi/Pat White type deal where they get a good skilled player and only have to give up trash in return

This version of the Jets is in much better shape (both personnel wise and financially) than the previous version when the team was gutted upon entering the NHL for the '79-80 season.

I'm still skeptical. I guess it's too early to rate their draft class, but I wasn't too impressed with their first two picks. I do agree that they did a good job in not overpaying for FA, but it just seems like they're too complacent. They have strong netminding and a very promising defensive side, but the lack of depth at forward would be my concern. I live in Atlanta so I got to see a lot of it first-hand last year. I don't know who the top 3 forwards available for next year's FA market will be, but they should take a shot. This will also help with them stay above the ever-growing cap floor.

I hate that I still love the players while being fed up with the "suits."
