Wanted to get a thread under way so we can post our thoughts on who won and who lost today. Gonna take some time to take all the moves in, so I will probably just start with a quick assessment of how my team did and a few knee-jerk reactions thrown in.

Jackets: Meh.
I mean, everyone knew that Gaborik was not staying. So to get a NHL player and two (essentially) second rounders was pretty good return for accommodating a guy who had a short list of where he wanted to go. Not sure what the Jackets are going to do with the very high number of 3rd/4th liners they have now. Was really hoping they could get something out of them.

Schultz... well. He's a somewhat expensive rental, but with both Tyutin and Murray out and no one really stepping up, he's a decent safety net. Only losing a 5th is good.

Otherwise
Winners:
Montreal - That's some firepower with Vanek. And cheap too.
Detroit - Legwand is a great addition.

Losers:
Isles. Just no two ways about it.

Underrated move:
Carolina getting Loktionov in a salary dump. Could pay HUGE in a few years.

Winners:
Habs - Getting Vanek for very little is a tremendous move for them
Panthers - Roberto Luongo is a big move for them, it will help them in the future
Flyers - Andrew MacDonald is a nice pickup and trading Mesz for a 3rd + having cap space & keeping the young kids/draft picks is a nice thing for them
Kings - Got Marian Gaborik for very little too and the Brayden McNabb trade is great
Wild - Getting Matt Moulson for pretty much nothing was a nice move for them as well

Losers:
Canucks - Dumpster fire
Islanders - Even bigger dumpster fire
Ducks - They did nothing, they traded Penner for nothing because they assumed they'd get a big time scorer - didn't happen

Underrated move:
Caps getting Dustin Penner and Jaroslav Halak are solid additions

Any other franchise would fire Garth Snow by tomorrow morning. I can honestly say Isles fans everywhere are calling for his head. What a disgrace the team has become. I hope to hear more stuff like what the TSN guys said for the rest of the season. IT'S ABOUT TIME!!

you know maybe you should just leave garth out and focus primarily on Wang. Wang believes and wants him to continue to do this job whether hes bad at it or not is besides the point now because Wang is ok with this. its mind boggling but its the way he wants his team run.

I hate this season all around. cant wait til its over in 20 games

Winners
Canadiens- sent almost nothing for one of the best players avail.
Lightning- got a massive return for a player who basically said I want to be traded and would only accept it to one team.
Caps- finally have a goalie and addition by subtraction by trading Erat

Losers
Islanders- no need to rehash everyone knows
Kings- Gaborik doesnt fit and probably wont help them in the playoffs
Chicago- by doing nothing I think they are behind the blues sharks and ducks

Neutral
Rangers- St. Louis will help their offense this year but now lack leadership and have put a hit to the future and kinda overpaid. St. Louis will help in the playoffs but chances are wont win them a cup

Buffalo- they went to rebuild mode so we wont know if the picks will be anything but for the next few years will be tough on the sabers.

Ducks- Penner wasn't working so that trade was good and getting something for Fasth was good but they didn't get anything for a cup run this year.

I think there could be several GMs who are pointing the finger at Garth Snow for their lack of activity today. By the time Vanek and Moulson were dealt, there was very little time left for other deals to be made. At least Jarmo was proactive enough to made a deal for Gabby.

At least your team has hope. The only hope the Isles will come when Wang sells the team. Right now I just don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. In fact if there's a light it's an oncoming train.

That's a good point.

And a couple more who are probably REALLY pissed at what Vanek went for. I guarantee most would have given more. They probably just didn't think they could afford it.

Granted, you have to make that call. But still.

the return for luongo was the best we were going to get for a 8 year contract on a 35 year old player. a 3rd line centre who I believe can score 20 goals and a top prospect goalie that was in a shit goalie team is very good. if luongo retires before 40 we are kinda screwed with cap due to the CBA rules.

not trading Kesler is bad and its good. bad because he is injury prone and is one injury away in the next 20 games that will diminish his value signficantly. bad because also at seasons end the teams that lined up for him will have more time to wait for the canucks to panic and not do what they did with luongo. they will also miss out on an extra playoffs with kesler. his contract expires in 2 years after this. we would get more if we traded him now so someone had him for 3 years locked and healthy now. I dont want to give him away for nothing either, Sutter which was the player rumoured to be coming back to the canucks from the pens is a better Matthias who we got for Luongo, but not by a ton maybe 30 to 40% better, do you really want that for kesler? I dont.

I give Gillis a C++ for the luongo trade and a C+ for NOT trading kesler but if the names come out and they are good god help him. this off season will be the biggest in canucks history. there will be no comparison how important it will be to the development of the franchise, the sedins need to heal as does burrows. I dont see another season like this for either of those 3. if we do buy out central.

today sucked but it could have been worse tomorrow for the canucks. now just miss the playoffs get a decent pick and see what we can do at the draft

That and what David_son said keeps me from grading the Sabres totally.

The McNabb deal was a bit odd to me and makes me wonder if there was an intention to turn that around into something else. Same thing with picking up Mitchell from the Wild (last I've seen, the pick associated with that is still TBA, so I'll withhold judgment on that one for now).

I think they did OK with the Halak deal getting both Neuvirth and Klesla, and I was happy with the pre-deadline trade of Miller and Ott (and the earlier Vanek deal).

Having a boatload of picks won't mean anything if Murray doesn't draft and develop well though, so it's gonna be a few years before we can really grade this deadline.

I will say though that I like Murray's approach. Liking our chances in the Connor McDavid sweeps next year, but he inherited a huge shit-show and has shown a total willingness to blow it up. Next up: offseason buyout of Leino.

How the Sabres do on draft day will tell whether all their deals pan out. With a bit of luck they could hit the jackpot. We shall see. They can't afford any Grigorenko like mistakes.

Exactly. I'm hopeful that Murray's history as a scout will factor positively into his drafting abilities.

Regier wasn't a terrible drafter overall, but he had an awful lot of misses in the first round.

Reminds me of Sather could find some gems in the later rounds but has missed on all but two first round picks.

Exactly. Campbell was a 6th, Miller a 5th, Gaustad a 7th, and Marcus Foligno a 4th.

But then you've got Mika Noronen, Barrett Heisten (who?), Artum Kryukov (who?), Marek Zagrapan, Dennis Persson, and Joel Armia who were all first round picks.

I noticed hockey is similar to basketball if you dont have a top 4 pick its hard to find a franchise guy.obviously there are certain years and certain players that are exceptions its almost better to tank for a few years then it is to keep trying to build a winner.

I was very impressed with the way LaFontaine went about hiring a GM. I think it's to bad he left because it kind of reminded me of what they're doing in Columbus with JD & Kekalainen. The Blue Jackets are definately headed in the right direction. We won't know for a few years with the Sabres.

I like how TSN gave Snow the BIGGEST F POSSIBLE.

Even NHL network, where everything was a "great deal" and every player was "a huge pick up", even they blasted the Isles.

Sorry Bolts.

This is what happens when idiots run the asylum. It's hard for me to say, but I really have lost all hope until Wang & Snow are gone. Of course we know that isn't happening anytime soon.:gaah:
