154-85-2 (.643) in 15 years.

Never had a below .500 season.

10 playoff appearances.

A S.B. ring.

How is he not a good coach?

I personally think he's the recipient of a great front office. I'm not saying he's a bad coach. Just not a very good one. I don't think he makes great in game decisions generally speaking and gets outsmarted.

Only one ring even though he had one of the NFL's top QB's, top receivers, top running game, and top defense.

That said, he managed Bell and Brown at the same time which nobody else has been able manage even one of them so he gets credit for that.

You don't go 15 straight season without a losing one without being a great coach.

Tony Dungy had Peyton Manning. Only one ring. Guess he's a bad coach.

Andy Reid's had alotta good players. Only one ring. Guess he's a bad coach.

Sean Payton had Brees. Only one ring. Guess he's a bad coach.

Seems I'm in the minority opinion around here that Tomlin isn't actually a very good coach. But I do feel the Steelers front office is pretty damned great at roster building to fit their scheme. I actually think Mitch is going to have a decent season.
He is an average coach in my opinion. He's had the benefit of a good qb and an owner that leaves him alone.

I always love the opinions they weren't all that good due to the players they had.

Makes me question their value. Was Vince, Bill, Tom and even Don really all that valuable.

I consider him an above-average coach but not a great one.

You don't have the accomplishments he has by being a bad or even mediocre coach. However I do feel his teams underperformed to their talent in the playoffs which is why I have a tough time considering him a great coach.

From their last Super Bowl appearance in 2010 to 2021 they've made the playoffs 7 times and have only been to one AFC championship in that span. They also have a couple of bad playoff loses in that span as well.

2011 losing to the Tim Tebow lead Broncos.

Let the Pats and Ravens beat the breaks off you in two of those playoff games.

2020 letting the Browns go up 28 to 0 in the 1st quarter

2017 was the worst to me losing to the Jags when you had a bye week and you let them hang 45 points on you.

I just feel his teams have lacked a sharpness that great teams usually have which is why I put him in the good not great coach category.

Tom Brady broke the ring argument imo

In what way?

I don't think anyone will ever match Brady's 7 rings (or even 8 if he wins another). I've read on here that some believe a QB now needs two rings. Is that what you mean?

Yeah, Tomlin does have a good front office and ownership. The Steelers have been a relevant franchise for years. Only two coaches since 1992.

Because he has ring-blocked quite a few players, coaches and teams.

The 2 ring argument is even a little silly when you consider that Peyton Mannings two rings came with solid defensive play and Elways came with a great running game. etc. etc.

Ahhh I see what you mean. McNabb, Ryan & Hasselbeck could each have a ring and then Brady would only have 4.

There was one pretty badass Chargers team that Brady beat, too. Halfway decent chance Mahomes would have two rings. Or Goff would have ring.

That's neat and all, but you're not looking at what actually transpired in those seasons. I seem to recall some of those teams that lost in the playoffs were really beat up and missing plenty of key guys. This is a problem in my opinion. People don't seem to realize what it takes to get there and sometimes they things that were lost in doing so, it weakens some of those teams to the point that very average teams could fairly easily beat them. It usually take some luck and good circumstances to win that obelisk. Quite frankly, judging on those results only is fairly closed minded.

Yeah but I took a sample size of over 10 years and you can't say in all of those years injuries have played a role in that amount of time that has led to such playoff futility.

All teams deal with injuries and roster turnover and yes injuries will derail some seasons but I still contend the Steelers should've been more successful with the talent they had in the span of time that they did.

I'm not even saying Tomlin is a bad coach or even an average one just a good not great one based on his overall history as a head coach.
