They are sold under the "refurbished" title. If you have a budget of $500 for a laptop, you can get allot more bang for your buck going with a refurb. And the overwhelming odds are that you will not notice any negatives.

Don't think I would ever buy a refurb laptop. Most are rogue units that will give you no end of problems.

We have a refurb Samsung.

Perfect for our needs.

Never leaves the office downstairs. Ever.....

If I'm not at work or downstairs at home the internet doesn't exist for me...

I've had a Chromebox for a few years now. It probably runs pretty much the same Chrome OS that runs on Chromebooks.

When I first got it, the installed video player didn't play half the stuff I had. I installed a Linux system that plays the videos. The installed player got upgraded over time; it's still quirky but plays most things I try.

The biggest downside I have with the Chrome OS is you have to log into your Chrome account to do anything. Can be a RPIA at times.

I don't recommend this. A new computer is a much cheaper option.

I'd rather necro-bump this thread than start a new one...I'm about to be in the market for a laptop.

I started traveling for work recently, only a couple of times a year so far, but the trips are five days long and I need to stay somewhat connected. I can access my email through the web, don't have to have lotus notes loaded on the unit. I figure I can work with something like a chromebook, which are lighter and cheaper.

I'm hearing different things about refurbs: several of you guys say they're shit, a couple others say they're good as new. I could tolerate the extra poundage to get a bigger, sturdier model, like a refurbished Lenovo or Thinkpad, but not if it's going to drive the cost up too much. So I guess my main decision is between getting a brand new chromebook for a couple hundy, or getting a refurb 14" and having the convenience of office suite on it.

Go for a refurb laptop. I've had several refurbished electronic items through the years and have never had an issue with one. They typically come with a full warranty as well. Many, if not most, refubs have had nothing wrong with them. Even an opened and returned laptop has to sell as a refurb. If just looking at a Chromebook, you might as well get a good tablet.

I still use a Kindle Fire from 3 years ago. It works okay but obviously screen is small and I have to do a lot of scrolling. It would be more of a convenience thing to get a bigger screen and a keyboard.
