Why would the Pats hire Lombardi?

I always thought the guy over rated.

While nothing is firm or official, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport [ame="[MEDIA=twitter]433955091280695296[/MEDIA]"]reported Thursday[/ame] that Lombardi has had discussions with the New England Patriots about joinging their front office, per a person informed of the team's situation

I'm at a loss on this one...

Yeah he has been with BB before so it doesn't surprise me that he would end up back there. Not sure how much he is going to help though considering how horrible his drafts have been as a GM in the NFL.

Yes, I read that too - which made this even more puzzling. If you're hiring a guy with whom you've had success before, I can see that. I don't know that anyone has really had success with Lombardi.

The NFL is so competitive, just because a front office guy hasn't had much luck in some places doesn't mean he cant be part of a successful team in another capacity. There is just too many moving pieces to judge aptitude solely on team records.

McCloughan was a washout in SF as a GM and is now a major contributor in the FO of Seattle.
