Barry is ok and I know Denver has a lot more talent, but Phillips is a great defensive coach and always has been. I still don't understand why we passed on him.
Lots of teams passed on him. Hindsight is always perfect.

Not trying to undervalue Wade, but I don't think you can extrapolate without taking into account the talent he's working with currently.

Good point Shark but that is where your GM steps in. By your reasoning Gruden is not doing what is best for the team only what is best for himself. Im not sure if SM had any say in this hire or was it all on Gruden? Im shocked Danny had no say. IF I was running the team I would say to myself who is the better coach? That answer is Phillips.

Are you seriously suggesting that Snyder should be more involved in the selection of coaches? Are you insane?

look , wade has been a superior DC his whole career . but barry didnt exactly have the talent to work with that wade does . you have miller and ware along with ray . we have no linebackers that compete with that . wolfe and malik jackson again are better then any d/lineman we have on the roster . and please only breeland woul start in denver's secondary

barry has a lot to prove but he has never had talent to work with in detroit or DC

Wade Phillips is a brilliant defensive mind. He always has been. He may get another head coaching gig next season because of what he did this season. Then we would be looking for another DC anyways.

Regardless of talent, Wade Phillips would have done better than Barry but it wouldn't have mattered this season. Bottom line is we need consistency in scheme.

Yea I'd say it's more the players than him but he helps. I've always thought he was a very good DC.

This is all 100% true. But Phillips still would've been a better hire.

We need to also realize that 21 teams hired a DC between the time wade was fired from his last job and hired by the Broncos. Wade interviewed for many of those jobs. So clearly wade isn't as great as some think. He has some issues if 21 teams passed on him over the last couple of years.

true jy but he was a proven NFL defensive coordinator. Was Barry? No. Grudens agenda cost us a great defensive mind. Im not saying he would of had the same impact here as he did Denver b/c the talent was better in Denver. Plus just the fact that we said no to this guy coming off a 4-12 season is just crazy to me. Gruden's selfish reasons as Shark pointed out cost us.

I recall thinking it was a slam dunk that the Skins would hire Phillips with the family connection and the fit, need, etc. My thinking was in line with what Shark and others have said about Gruden protecting himself a bit. Now granted, most of us could probably coach a decent defense out of the players Denver has on that side of the ball, but it's not like WP hasn't had success elsewhere in the past.

What's done is done. Let's get Barry some players on D and see what he can do.

I would agree that wade would seem a better choice over Barry. But clearly something about the guy has quite a few teams turned off. Since non of us were privy to any of the interviews, we don't know what his issue is.

Although I though Phillips would be the best hire he is 68 years old. He also wouldn't have had Denver's personnel. I think we might have been a little better but not 3 wins better and not ready to win a Super Bowl. If he coaches 3 or 4 more years than you might think it was a bad move.

Cmon - this is 100% speculation - give it a rest. The Redskins just had a great season by all of our standards. Stop trying to reintroduce the soap opera type drama into the mix. They don't have Phillips, but they appear to be trending in the rt direction. Move on - let's hope for the best with Gruden, Barry & everyone else.

Not really. Most people appear to bring up these arguments to show that the Redskins didn't make the correct decisions & could have been so much better. The reality is that this team is being run better than it has been in a very long time and likely would be much worse if they used the suggestions made by the majority of fans.

Well the team was run very poorly in the past so anything would be better. The majority of the fans are right in some cases.
