Apparently they showed a few pics of him as a kid with Sabres apparel on during an episode of 24/7?

I haven't seen this mentioned, but I thought it was interesting.

Was he a big Mogilny fan or something?

Heaven forbid they talk about anything but Crosby and OV.

If they get knocked out before the finals that's good for the game because casual fans have no idea who is playing and they wonder why the ratings are low? Not rocket science here but if they would promote the GAME and other stars some casual fans might relate to it.

The way they are promoting this game it sounds like a skills competition between Crosby and OV.

Before you rail on me I like both players but the NHL better get some PR people that know what the hell they are doing. MAF is one of the leaders in voting for the ASG and gets no mention. Letang is having an outstanding season and no mention.

Pittsburgh fans should be pissed because it makes their team look like a one trick pony. Cap fans should feel the same way.

I guess without OV and Crosby your teams would suck.

On 24/7?!? Seriously, Boss, they've focused SURPRISINGLY little attention on the OV/Crosby thing. It has been much more about the teams, strategy, and the game itself.

In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary.....come again????

We didn't have a lot of money growing up, so I'm sure it was on sale or something. I was a kid, I didn't care.

Dude, I hate ALL Florida universities - Gators, 'Noles, 'Canes. For some reason, those schools seem to have more egomaniac, NCAA-rule breaking players than any other area in the country.

Fear the Turtle. :)

What the fuck were they thinking buying out Friedgen? He has done so much with an inferior team this year during a supposed rebuild. he is a fantastic coach and a standup guy. I felt terrible for him.

I am talking about the promos on VS and NBC. Not every one watches HBO or even has it. If they do and are casual fans they are not going to watch a show on HBO dedicated to hockey.

I know you're a Caps fan and I expect the same from Pens fans but you will not always have OV and Crosby and that obviously would change the attention.

In the early 90's when the Bills were good we were watching ESPN and my son said "dad if I wasn't from here and a Bills fan I would hate them" I agreed 100% It made me sick the coverage they got. I tend to look at the overall picture and what's best for the game.

It's very obvious that the NHL has failed in the PR department because the ratings have dropped even tho it's one of the best games in the world. That's not my fault so where do we point the finger?

I am not talking about the WC ratings I am talking in general.

I don't know - I'm a big college hoops fan, but not much of a college football fan. I wonder if it's the first time a coach has won a Bowl game, been named conference coach of the year, and been fired.

Getting people to watch is what's best for the game. Whether they stay has NOTHING to do with marketing, but whether they enjoy the game or not. Getting them in the door is the job of marketing, and that's what stars (fuck Dallas) do. Who are they going to up in the promos? Talbot and Laich staring at each other. OF COURSE it's going to be Sid and OV. I can't tell you how many people in DC have become REAL hockey fans simply b/c of Ovechkin. I know it happened with me and the NBA - never used to watch it, then I saw Lebron at a few games, and I follow it now. Not a die-hard, but I'll watch a game on Saturday whereas I never would have before.

It's been proven time and again in sports.

I'm sincerely not sure what you mean when you are talking about how the Bills were covered or marketed.

What's wrong with say the Pittsburgh Penguins play the Washington Caps on New years day outdoors.

That would intrigue me, Like an out door NBA game. I hate the NBA but would check it out to see the spectacle.

I wonder how many people here would say the same. I wouldn't care what teams were playing I would check it out. PERIOD!

They just threw the picture up while talking about him playing hockey as a kid. They made no mention of it in the audio.

The Mogilny theory seems strong, but as a kid, I had shirts from a lot of random teams (Miami Hurricanes?). You're a kid, you wear what somebody gives you.

I had Charlotte Hornets shorts and T-shirt. I didn't even know who they were.

I also have a Lamar Odom LA Clippers Jersey. I don't know where it came from, but I found it in my drawer.

Nothing, but that's just one part of the marketing. Another is the city itself. Another is the venue (Fenway, Wrigley). Another is the stars they can market. Another is the storyline (rivalry, good v. evil, etc.).

So there's nothing wrong with what you're saying, but don't you honestly think more people will tune in because they love or hate Ovechkin or Crosby, or simply want to see if they'll do something magical?

I think maybe you just have PTSD (Post-Traumatic Swamp Disorder). Symptoms include an aversion to all things related to Ovechkin-Crosby, Sharks and refs, and snap judgments on players greatness or lack thereof based on a stretch of 10 games or less.

No, The teams and the sport. Let me ask you a question, they have promoted stars and not the team's or sport with the winter classic. Has it worked? Ratings will tell you it hasn't and if that doesn't work at least promote the damn game and not just a few that heaven forbid break an ankle and are out for the season and then these casual fans that say what is this team? I never saw them before, I think I will change the channel to Oprah or something. That's what you get, promote the damn game and not just the players.

The NHL should take lessons from the NFL that say's "first place is on the line when the Giants face the Eagles"

I have watched both sports for almost 50 years and trust me I am inclined to watch a game based on GOOD promo like the NFL does. If you disagree look at the ratings.

Maybe, thanks for the encouragement. I'm delusional because I disagree with you? Now that's swamp mentality.

Where did I say you are delusional? It was just a joke.

The NFL doesn't say what you're saying...they actually say "first place is on the line when Eli Manning and the Giants take on Michael Vick and the Eagles."
