'Ol Whip is gettin' mighty itchy for a mouth full of feathers!

We're three weeks away here in MA~
Same... Northern region of ID opens up Oct 1st.. I have to wait until the 19th. Been warming up with Dove, Quail & putting a dent in the magpie population lol.

Had some Toms cross my path the other day, but didn't have anything bigger than 2-3/4 7.5 shot on me... Didn't want to risk feeding the coyotes.

Another successful opening day yesterday. Whip's in his 7th season and on top of his game. Always a joy to hunt with~

Well he isn’t worthy of a magazine but this 4x4 Whitey has a helluva body on him. Should pack the freezer nicely!3837944B-5018-4E12-94B4-BDE59E7F4A42.jpegAE0FC87D-6BB5-4966-9D3F-C5ACCF676B87.jpeg

Came up empty with elk this year but I've had the Gordon out twice this year and have found a few birds. First full year for Griffey and he's starting to get it.

Haven't been pheasy hunting since I was a kid... But man I have fond memories of it. Dogs are constantly working, and we didn't have a pointer so we had to be on the ball when they got into 'em!

Great work dude! And glad to hear the pup is gettin after it! How old is he/she? And how does Griffey do with mouthing the birds?

He turns 2 this month. He won't retrieve birds, I didn't force fetch him and probably won't. He will point dead birds tho so that's helpful....and I don't have to fight a quail out of his mouth like his Lab brother :).

Lol been there. Seen both sides of the coin with that. Had a lab that wanted to damn near eat every bird it fetched, and another that just kept spitting out the bird mid-swim. The lab we are currently hunting only has an aversion to Teals & Geese. Why she doens't like to mouth a Teal is beyond us... As for the geese... she got wing-beat on a lot by geese when she was younger. She was never a fan of those angry bastards lol. If its still alive at all then she refuses to touch it. Has to be stone cold dead for her to grab it.

Don't blamer her on the geese, they're mean bastards!!!

Boomer, the lab, would have a soft mouth until it was late in the day and he was super tired. Figured he didn't want to give it up cause he had to work all day for it lol. Can't complain, I don't think I ever lost a bird with that dog.

Boomer sounds like a legend! We used to have a female chocolate lab named Katie that did that after a long day fetching birds. She would start to take them up to the truck instead of back to us when she was tired & wanting to be done lol.

A good bird dog is worth their weight in gold. Spent many hours trudging the banks in my waders chasing down birds throwing rocks to try & entice younger dogs in training lol. Once they start to figure it out it becomes less of a hassle.

Boomer hunted right out of the box. I'll have to dig up the pics but his first retrieves were at about 5 months, easiest dog to start training. It was reigning him in that was a challenge.

When he stuck his nose to the ground trailing a runner.....there was no stopping him. Eventually I just gave up and watched the show. Never failed a rooster would flush 2-300 yards out.

Nephew, 21 has been hunting and fishing for at least 20 years, no shit... he dropped out of Nevada, worked for Tesla for a couple of months, took a job in 2020 running celebrity hunting/fishing pack trains - is now booked thru 2024. (speaking of books, his -already- reads like a Jack London novel). Got his elk opening day (Eagle, CO). The "nap" picture is, imo, postcard quality.

Ran into some Huns today. Haven’t seen them all year but the covey was probably 15 strong, pretty good for around here. E6744FA8-7ADF-40CB-8494-73159DD36985.jpeg
