He's also a bit older (41?) and they probably didn't start teaching English as early as they do these days until he was probably too far along with his schooling.

Swedes currently in their 20's through mid-late 30's are generally pretty fluent in English from what I've seen/heard.

Doesn't even require 20s. Most of them by the time they are out of high school are fluent.

They start in second grade currently, and most of the movies and TV shows that they get are in English with Swedish sub-titles, instead of being dubbed over like in Germany, France, Spain, etc. The only shows/movies they dub are kids shows, and even then the original English version is usually available, and a lot of parents take advantage of it, because it helps their kids learn English better AND learn to read better at the same time.

The big reason is that Swedes don't harbor any illusions about their language becoming a global language (*ahem* French *ahem*) and know that they need English to compete on a global level. That's why there's so many large Swedish companies that we all know despite being a country of only 9M people.
