Side note, Lidstrom, and Swedish players in general, speak English unbelievably well. Very little accent compared to their European counterparts. Weird.

That's just Swedes in general, not even Swedish hockey players.

When I lived over there, I had several Swedish colleagues who, if you didn't know it, you would think were American based on their English skills.

I have a lot of Swede friends (met online playing games many years ago) and they all speak/write in perfect English because they are taught English in schools starting pretty early on... so by the time they hit college/workforce, they're pretty fluent in it.

Plus, as an ESL person myself, English is one of the easiest languages to learn (relatively speaking)...

I have dim recollections of Lidstrom not being at all fluent in English earlier on in his career...but maybe my memory is letting me down.

You're prolly right; I'll take your word for it.

He's also a bit older (41?) and they probably didn't start teaching English as early as they do these days until he was probably too far along with his schooling.

Swedes currently in their 20's through mid-late 30's are generally pretty fluent in English from what I've seen/heard.
