Since 1996 every team that has won an undisputed national title except for Oklahoma in 2000 has had at least two top ten national recruiting classes in the four years before a title. So while signing a top ten recruiting class doesn’t guarantee that you’re going to win a national title — indeed, there are plenty of teams that don’t — for 23 of the past 24 years, you can’t win a title without at least two top ten recruiting classes.

Well, the past 24 years of recruiting data suggests your national champion will be one of these 13 teams:

4 top ten classes: Alabama, Georgia

3 top ten classes: Ohio State, LSU, Clemson, Oklahoma, Texas

2 top ten classes: Auburn, Michigan, USC, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Florida

Florida should get to the playoffs, but likely won't win it all.

I feel like we can take out Michigan, USC, Texas, aTm and ND as I don't see any of them pulling it off (Auburn and Florida would be very long shots).

LSU has been pretty gutted with both players and coaches so a repeat would be an incredible accomplishment.
Georgia is going to be rebuilding almost their entire offense.
Oklahoma is going to have a new QB and I haven't seen anything out of them that makes me believe they can get over the hump.

So basically it will be Alabama, Ohio State or Clemson.

Now you don't even have to watch next season.

Your analysis is sound IMO. Sad but probably true. Until some others start stealing several of the top notch recruits, this may be the case every year.

It's going to probably those three + another SEC school or OU.

That still leaves one more team in the playoffs. We still have something to look forward to.

Depending on how they replace Herbert, I think Oregon is going to be right there. They've recruited incredibly well recently, and they return a lot from last year's Rose Bowl winning team.

Depends on who you are comparing Oregon's recruiting against. If the Pac 12, then yes.

They were 12th this year per 24/7. But 1/2 the SEC had ratings above them this year.

Seven SEC teams finished ahead of Oregon (and the rest of the nation for that matter) this year in 24/7 rankings. #1 Georgia, #2 Bama, #4 LSU, #6 A&M, #7 Auburn, #8 Florida, #10 Tennessee. Four SEC teams ahead of them in 2019 and three in 2018.

While Clemson has been a thorn in their side lately, the CFP still runs through the SEC. Until other teams start pilfering more of their recruits, the talent gap is going to be hard to overcome.

They're not gonna have to beat half the SEC though. Only one of them. Of course that also means beating either OSU or Clemson, too.

I don't trust any team from the Pac12. The last like 10 years they keep having some team that gets pumped up before the season, only to end up as the best team in the Pac12 but with like 2-4 losses. Stanford, USC, Washington, Oregon...don't trust 'em.

I'll give it to Oregon, they're finally recruiting like a national power and not a finesse team that can only beat up on the Pac12. They're building a legit team, and they're bringing in some elite players. They've cleaned up on the west coast in recruiting, and Cristobal seems to have them moving in the right direction. 2020 is probably premature, but I could easily say they're a legit contender in 2021 barring some catastrophic events.

True. But IMHO teams need to elbow their way ahead of several of those seven SEC schools in order to make a recruiting "splash"...for lack of a better term.
