1) The Giants weren't held to 13 points because of Maualuga. It was a game the entire team just didn't show up. Was it 4 or 5 TO's? Credit to our defense, but Maualuga? Feel free to hang onto this one, but you're 1/4 even with it.

2) The players that can make up for no o-line, no run game, and no receivers are few and far between. Even Carson isn't one of those players.

3) Matthews sucks. Gates is old. Their offense is in the bottom half of the league easily.

But let me just get this straight, you're advocating that Maualuga is a better player than he was earlier in the year and that's indicative of his play against teams over the last month that you believe to have good offenses? Or are you just arguing for the sake of arguing?

Nah, I hate Maulaluga. I think he's improved but that's like saying that you scored a 49% on a test and brought your grade up to a 62%. It still sucks. More than anything I was trying not to discount the defenses play...which has been exceptional regardless of opponent. I think the D overall deserves credit. They have done their jobs. Can't help who they play. But I would consider Rey the weak link on that unit.

My big thing is when evaluating any players improvement or digression, do it against level competition.

Maualuga has been pretty mistake free for a few weeks. It could be because he's improved, or as is my opinion that it's due to the easier schedule. The next 4 weeks will tell the story. Will he revert to his old ways or will we see the "improved" Maualuga.

I've been very happy with the D overall. Even if it's against easier competition, they still have to show up and as you said they can only play who's on the schedule. So while I've been happy, because I'm a big picture kinda guy, that doesn't mean I'm going to be impressed by what they've done until I see it consistently against better competition.

When judging the quality of play, just use opponent's average stats.

San Diego averages 21.5 ppg, they got 13 against the Bengals
Oakland averages 19.6 ppg, they got 10 against the Bengals
Kansas City averages 15.7 ppg, they got 6 against the Bengals
NYGiants averages 26.8 ppg (That's 5th) they got 13 against the Bengals.

Combined the four teams average 20.9 ppg on the season, they averaged 10.5 against the Bengals.

What does this mean? For four weeks the Bengals' defense has been able to shut down all offenses they have played, including one very high scoring one (NYG).

You can pick this apart all you want (I don't doubt rey will) but it's a fact that for the last month the Bengals' D has been about 10 points better than their opponent's offense, and if the trend holds they should be able to hold Dallas to 13-17 points.

Actually 10.5 ppg for four weeks against any four NFL teams is pretty damned good defense. I credit the line plus Burfict, Leon Hall, and Pacman. They've all been excellent. Let's also not forget we have been running the ball and controlling clock during this sequence.

Duh!

There's never been any contention - nor is there now - that the Bengals defense plays very well against crappy teams (minus the Giants). That's been the case for about 3-4 years.

And if you took your hater blinders off, you would have seen I just said I was "very happy" with the D overall the last month.

I'm pretty sure you're arguing with yourself here.

Edit: And "just use opponents average stats" is very simplistic. But that's for another thread. Broaden your horizon.

They played very poorly early in the season, most notably twice versus Cleveland. The four week trend is a complete change in direction using opponents stats. But you have to do the rest of the research for yourself, rey. Just don't feel like putting in the time.
