Those WR screens were great playcalls. Gruden must have exploited some type of tendency with their defense

Two blocks downfield. Monster. That was the kind of play you could expect from Anthony Munoz.

I remember him having a play like that back in 2010 (or around there).... It was a similar screen play where he just went out there and destroyed a few guys.

Whit's a good ballplayer. He's been a big plus to this organization. I wish we still had copies of the old ESPN forum on the day he was drafted. At least 90% of the board lost their collective minds. It was priceless.

That was back when everyone thought Levi Jones was the second coming of Anthony Munoz. I'm a big fan of Whit. He's blue collar all the way, and a big example of how the makeup of the team is different now. All the thugs and the "Hollywood boys" have been replaced largely by team first types, and they have certainly been more consistent than the boom or bust types of the first half of Marvin's regime.

Levi was great before his knee issues

That is true, but he went from awesome to turnstile in one season.....Whit has obviously survived his knee issues and come back better than ever......and this whole oline is the best unit they have had since Rich Braham had to retire.....they are really solid at four of five positions and even Cook at center has come on recently.....this bunch can pass block and run block....

When you look at it though, Whit was an amazing pick..... He was a low 2nd rounder. He was picked as our franchise qb was rehabbing a devastating knee injury. And, he's a guy that even if he weren't athletic enough to be a LT (turns out he was) he would have been a nice guard or a replacement for Willie at RT.

The fact that we got a 5+ year LT out of the low second round is pretty amazing for this franchise.

Getting a top tier LT anywhere outside of the top ten picks is pretty rare. To land one late in the 2nd rd is a steal. It was probably the best pick this franchise has made in the last 10 yrs.. Although Atkins in the 4th round eventually surpasses it if he stays healthy and keeps up his standard level of play through his current contract

My (incomplete) list of picks we had that caused the most butthurt for some of our fans on the ESPN or SportsHoopla forums (so I'm obviously only talking about the internet age).

1) Andrew Whitworth -- Damn were there some pissed off folks. I forget who everyone wanted, but I think Whit was drafted a littler earlier than expected. We also had a great O-line the year before.

2) Jermaine Gresham -- Pretty even split between those that were happy that we finally drafted a tight end and those that were pissed that we didn't take Dez. Loss.

3) Leon Hall -- Buckeye butthurt. The anti-Michigan vibe was not helped by Chris Perry's tenure. I think we can all agree that Leon has lived up to the pick.

4) Chris Perry -- Everyone wanted Jackson. Everyone was right. Should be noted that we did get some extra pieces via the trade.

5) Andre Smith -- The consensus was that Tits was a bust in the making and Monroe was the safer pick. Monroe is now on his second team. But he does play LT.

6) Dre Kirkpatrick -- Many wanted David DeCastro. We took the extra pick which netted us Thompson and opted for Swag and Zeitler. Swag has sucked but Zietler and DeCastro is an interesting debate

Thoughts?

The way I remember it wasn't how early he was picked, but that most thought we were drafting for a position we didn't need, since we were thought to be set at both tackle positions for awhile. Of course we know how that turned out.

2) Jermaine Gresham -- Pretty even split between those that were happy that we finlly drafted a tight end and those that were pissed that we didn't take Dez. Loss.

I was happy, but as it turns out I may have been wrong. I have been disappointed that he hasn't developed into a consistent offensive weapon. We now have two supposedly super talents at TE who don't have a TD between them after six games. They don't even seem to have a plan to target either in the red zone and that makes zero sense to me.

3) Leon Hall -- Buckeye butthurt. The anti-Michigan vibe was not helped by Chris Perry's tenure. I think we can all agree that Leon has lived up to the pick.

Everyone except kramer. He'll never admit it.

4) Chris Perry -- Everyone wanted Jackson. Everyone was right. Should be noted that we did get some extra pieces via the trade.

Still trying to figure out why they favored Perry over Jackson.

5) Andre Smith -- The consensus was that Tits was a bust in the making and Monroe was the safer pick. Monroe is now on his second team. But he does play LT.

Always had faith in Andre, and he has justified my faith. He is easily at the very top at his position, and has been solid in pass protection even though many here thought that would be his weakness.

6) Dre Kirkpatrick -- Many wanted David DeCastro. We took the extra pick which netted us Thompson and opted for Swag and Zeitler. Swag has sucked but Zietler and DeCastro is an interesting debate

Not sure what happened with Dre. He's been hurt so much he hasn't had a chance to develop. I guess we are lucky that Newman was able to resurrect his career in the meantime. I also wanted DeCastro, but Zeitler has been great, especially as a road grading run blocker. As for DeCastro, he's been healthy this year and is playing as well as I thought he would, but I can't say we haven't done at least as well, and probably better, with Zeitler.
Thoughts?

An interesting list, to be sure.

The other criticism of the Whitworth pick back in the day was that Devin Hester was still on the board.

Andre got some seriously, seriously bad advice leading up to the combine and into the draft.

If he had anyone with half a brain, he wouldn't have been nearly in as bad of shape, or running with his shirt off....

That 2004 Draft could have been very big for the franchise. One decision back fired and had reverberations for years to come.

The Good:

The Broncos traded Deltha O'Neal, the 24th overall pick and 117th overall pick (4th round) to the Bengals for the 17th overall pick.

The Bengals ended up with Robert Geathers with that extra 4th rounder along with Deltha O'Neal.

The Broncos took D.J. Williams with the 17th pick

The Bad:

The Rams traded the 26th overall pick and the 123rd overall pick (4th round) to the Bengals for the 24th overall pick.

The Rams took Steven Jackson. The Bengals took Chris Perry and with the 123rd pick they took a project by the name of Stacy Andrews.

Not only did the Bengals miss out on one of the best RB in the league for years they also parlayed it into:

- Having to burn (and what a magnificent flame out this was) a 2nd round pick in '07 on RB Kenny Irons

- Franchising Stacy Andrews in '08 at the tune of $7.455 million that year. He started 14 games the previous year for Willie but it was a huge roll of the dice that obviously bit them in the ass. He left the following year (after blowing out his knee) to join his brother in Philadelphia. He hasn't played since the 2011 season.

That was quite a sight, wasn't it? But fat guys can play tackle, and play it well. Don't know who Andre was listening to, or not listening to, back then, but he has since refocused and done everything we have wanted of him and more. And we got him on the cheap longterm.

I will admit Whit has come back strong....HOPEFULLY he stays that way the rest of the season.... Still think we should pick a young LT in the draft.

Dude blew his knee out last year...hardly a fair comparison.

Also, the Bengals OL> Pitt OL...so, it's nice to be getting help from capable players.

Anyone have the PFT ratings for Decastro and Zeitler on the year?

I've never been big on DeCastro.... I've always liked Zeitler. Look it up.

I was just trying to give the benefit of the doubt. LOL.
