The replay of the LA Benefit celebrities/old timer's game is on NHL Network. They are playing the celebrity "coaches" comments through the PA as the game is going on, and there are at least 35 other commenters interviewing anyone who is walking around over game action.

I only watched like 10 minutes and could actually feel my IQ decreasing. Snoopy Doge yapping with all the basketball terms. Jackie Redmon getting excited about some she had to explain twice who it was... Ugh.

some one went at Ryan Kesler (as he was the assistant coach of this team) and he responded saying he wasnt with the team and offered to meet that person at the arena for a "chat" lol

/2010 little caesars team won the Pat Quinn U15 classic here in Burnaby ... scores were much closer lol

Curiosity was killing me. I really feel sorry for that goalie!

I dont know the tiering system in the US ... complete mystery to me lol

The Phoenix tournament my sons team played in was a supposed "AA" 18U tournament. My sons team (U18 - distinction here - our oldest kids were 17 and the kids on the other teams were 18) is A2 tier 2 here in BC and they pumped everyone*

After the quarterfinal game (in which they put 58 shots on the Boise Premier goalie and won 8-0) my sons team had a +25 goal difference (27 for / 2 against)

* pumped everyone and then lost in the semis in an 8am game against an Idaho Falls team they beat 4-1 opening round .... after a night of drinking (THAT NONE OF THEM WILL ADMIT TO!!!) with the "chill" kids from Bow River (Calgary) the night before.

No one learns anything in that situation. On either side.
Exactly and that team's record, scores each game and the total lack of scoring for the whole team is just sad. There is no way any of those kids ever improve in that situation. I bet most of them just want to quit.

US tournaments tend to be shady. When I oldest was in the baseball tournaments they ranked them A and B level. I knew the reality of the team I had was barely a B level team. I swear each tournament we went to were all A level teams just filling out the tournaments during their downtimes of when other tourneys weren't going on.

this is failure of the organizers/associations that put that state tournament together of course but take it from me ... i bet you 2 minutes after the game those 14 year old kids on the losing team have forgotten it happened and are running around trying to punch each other in the nuts in the dressing room lol

The "Tiers" are supposed to follow the old AAA, AA, A system. Tier 1 = AAA, Tier 2 AA, Tier 3 A.

The way it works here is AAA is elite travel. Nationwide and international, in age groups 8U, 10U , 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U. Columbus has one AAA team per age group, run by the Blue Jackets. AA is travel, but lower grade. They don't travel as far, and do not play internationally. Locally, we have one per rink program, it was intended to be one "elite" team per program, and to stop the standing up of new teams when someone's special snowflake didn't make one team or another. My kid played on three of those at once. A is house league, no travel all within local rinks. This is now also run by the Blue Jackets as the CBJHL. My Club program from Bantam (U14) and down are part of this. Our program does not have a AA team, but we do work with the Columbus Capitals AA team. Which currently has 3 teams in each age group.... And our Bantam (house) team beat 2 of their Bantam teams in scrimmages.

Used to be each rink had it's own house program, we played each other and there was one "select" (AA) team per program. But as I stated, someone's snowflake didn't make a team so they just stood up a new team and played "AA", filling their team with house players and then getting smooshed everywhere they go. Detroit, everyone wants their kid to play "AAA" so they have a whole league of "AAA" teams. When maybe 2 can compete Nationally, let alone in Canada. Jackets AAA won the Quebec PeeWee once because they look at themselves as a true AAA program and only take the top players.

So the issue isn't playing to the appropriate level, but dilution of the talent pool due to too many teams.

I realize this likely does not help unravel the mystery, lol.

the non sanctioned/affiliated tournaments around north america are a cash grab of course ... i mentioned it on these boards before but my sons spring hockey team (2 years ago iirc) were entered in a AA tournament in Whistler. Surrey Junior eagles AA U15 team were entered in it. Same calibre skilled kids. Was on a long weekend in May. Lot of those AA kids went away with their families and unable to attend. The Surrey team asked tournament organizers if they could drop out and get even a partial refund and organizers said no so they were like ok ... we are sending AAA kids.

ACTUAL Surrey Junior eagles JUNIOR team had a tryout camp that week for Alberta bantam kids. So that Surrey eagles spring team were like "hey kids ... want to go play in a free tournament while youre in town?" These kids were academy elite and most of them are in the whl or bchl now.

One of my sons teammates ended up suffering a fractured pelvis on a hit from one of these kids.

Down here we call those "Pre/post (pre-season/post-season)" tournaments. 100% cash grab. Focused on high school age kids but has expanded to some younger ones. Literally no restrictions who can play other than age. Players home from Junior, D1 and D2 college (as long as they are still 18. Go on ahead!

There's like 8 teams in just Ohio.

ahh I didnt realize the tiers replace or are synonymous with the A,AA,AAA in the US ... which begs the question ... how can that Belle Tire team that Little Caesars curb stomped be considered tier 1 ?

We may have gone back and forth about this before but here in BC for BC Hockey/Hockey Canada sanctioned leagues/associations its AAA (around 8 zone AAA and 8 academy AAA teams at each age group total in the province) and then A based on skill/talent level of the players. House is called "Rec" (Recreational - no hitting)

"AA" is our version of sham filler for unsanctioned leagues. Thats where the families with money pay to put their kids when they dont make A (rep) hockey. "A" in many cases has more talented players than "AA".

The tiering up here for non junior / association teams U18 and below only happens at A level ... and that tiering is based on # of registered players in each association. I dont know the exact threshholds for each level but our association has around 900 kids registered across all age groups so our A1 team (the best 9 forwards, 6 d and 2 goalies) is tier 1. Our A2 team is tier 2.... So on so forth. Smaller associations A1 teams (the best 17 players in their association) can be tier 3 (ie Sunshine Coast) because they have very few registered players.

During regular season, usually all A1 teams play in the same flight (division). Some of them fall to flight 2 after preseason balancing games.

When playoffs start for provincials though, teams will play other teams in their tier, so taking tier 3 as an example, you will sometimes have the top team that is labelled as A1 from a small association play an A3 team from a large association (and that A1 team from the smaller association invariably lays the boots to the A3 team from the larger association)
