Probably 10 or 11. Whenever Ferentz's 2nd year was. I'm not gonna look it up. Iowa usually schedules cupcakes as their opening game, even though UNI came very close to beating them a few years ago. Iowa dropped further in the rankings after beating UNI than Michigan did after losing to App St.

While I would agree that quite a few of those openers were against smaller opponents..we have had openers against Hawaii, miami oh, UK, Wyoming, Western Michigan, and a few more..

Southern Miss twice. they are no push over. but only one AQ team besides UK. but hey if it ain't broke, don't fix it. (referring to UF scheduling practices)

You kind of make it sound like those aren't smaller schools. Only 1 of those you just mentioned is a school in a major conference. How good was Hawaii when UF played them? How good was Miami (OH) when UF played them? In 2003 I think, Iowa beat Miami (OH), when Roethlisberger was a Sr, and was Miami's only loss. But Iowa was pretty good that season too.

Ask an alabama fan about la lafayette in 2007.. What seems like a scrub sometimes shows up to play ie: app st vs michigan.. Hawaii want exactly a scrub either they had come a good previous season and were looking to improve the year we played

Yeah...scheduling those scrubby-ass teams COULD POTENTIALLY be trouble, so we should give them mad props for not losing to scrubby-ass teams.

Why would ANY team schedule a challenging opponent? Fans don't want to see a hard fought contest...they want to see the Little Sisters of the Poor get their nose rubbed in it...right JortyGurl?

Coincidentally, Florida hasn't left Gainesville for a season opener during this streak either

For Texas, it's 11 years straight. We lost at NC State in '99 (I hated that game!!!). But for the most part, we've played scrubs to start out the season in the 1st week. It is very, very rare to start the season playing against other powerhouse programs. In the Mack Brown era, Texas usually starts out against a scrub, then a BCS opponent in the 2nd week.

Ga has also started off the season with teams such as, Ark st, So miss, Kent st, utah st, Ga southern, western ky, and la-lafayette..... I will give you some acknowledgement for going to Stillwater ok 1 time in the last. However traveling to columbia and clemson doesn't get you anything with me..
