Anyone concerned that the Saints might steal the 2nd playoff spot from us?

If they win tonight, they'll be just one game behind us. Not sure how the tiebrearkers work if it's record vs. common foes, or conference record?

They do not have a tough schedule, Giants and Falcons are the toughest and they can win both of those games.

The Saints sit 1.5 games behind us and 2 more losses in conference play. Our magic number with them is 4. In other words, to beat us out for the #2 seed, they'd need to finish with a better record as we'd win the tiebreaker. Needless to say, that is very unlikely to happen. They play NYG, DET, @TEN, @MIN, ATL, CAR. Three tough home games, and a tough road game as well. Two gimmies vs. CAR and @MIN. Even if they go 5-1, they finish 12-4, and we'd need to lose three games for them to take the two seed.

We have STL, @AZ, PIT, @SEA, @STL. One tough game in there, and it's at home on MNF. Even if we lose that, we still have the tiebreaker edge as long as we don't choke a division game. It's likely we win 13 games this year.

Of more (but not significant) worry would be the Cowturds. They are two games behind us with 5 to play. Our magic number with them is also 4, as we'd lose a tiebreaker due to the second week OT loss. They have @AZ, NYG, @TB, PHI, @NYG. Two/three tough games (depending upon how you view the Eagles). I can't see them sweeping the Giants, so at best they'd finish 11-5. We'd have to lose three to not get the #2 seed, at which point we could fall as low as the #4 seed.

if we don't get the #2 seed, it means we didn't win enough games. so just win and it doesn't matter what they do.

if they don't have a tough schedule, then how do you describe ours?

They won't. They'll lose at least one and the 49ers will win three of the last fivre to go 12 and 4 and at the very least win the tie breaker with the Saints.

Best answer right here. If the 49ers don't get the #2 seed now, it is all on them as they control their own destiny.

I think Seattle is a losable game for us.

It's on a shorten week at Seattle after we play the Steelers and when we play Seattle it's never a sure thing.

Shorten yes but much better than playing Baltimore on a short week.

I would've pencil Seattle as a loss but eff it, we win to put it to Carroll.

I'm still wondering what a "shorten" week is....

Seattle is losable, but we shouldn't lose it. Our D should dominate that offense, regardless of the venue.

Say what you want about Pete Carrol, but he has built a strong defense in Seattle. I don't think we'll lose that game, but IT IS losable.

The D has a lot of promise. But Washington moved the ball on them at will this week. And the offense is just awful these days. It would be a huge upset if we lost that one IMO.

That's a tough venue up there; just ask the Saints. Hopefully the 49ers will have this seeding thing locked up by then.

Does anyone know our magic number for securing the #2 spot? I know it would factor in a lot more teams and tie-breaking scenarios than the division, but was wondering if anyone had calculated that yet. I know the magic number for the number one seed is 7 presumably (us running the table and Green Bay losing twice in conference), right? 8 to be safe, but that ain't happening without a Rodgers injury.
