I saw them in 1981 opening for X at a small club in LA.

Good times.
I saw them for the first time in '80 at a hole in the wall club in West L.A, Club 88. I was hooked! I was in a deep music depression after CCR split in 1972, and The Blasters brought me back to life. Dave Alvin has gone on to have a hell of a career and is one of America's most underrated singer/songwriters. Granted, his vocals are an acquired taste, but his songs are killer.

In fact, if memory serves me correctly, Dave Alvin played some live dates as one of the guitarists for X filling in when Billy Zoom was sick. X's first album is a classic.
