One special week doesn't make up for three years of abuse. Yeah, he knows he'll take a pretty big pay cut, but he wants out that bad. Racist Bawstun is no place for a black athlete if he won't play Uncle Tom.

Like most of the black people on this planet, David Price does not play Uncle Tom. Damn, does everything have to be about race?

I think Price was saying the press can't hold his postseason issues over his head anymore with the cards comment, but it was sort of an enigmatic thing to say.
Maybe we could get Eckersley to translate?
"He meant throw a yakker for your coolu"

Hmmm. Stay and get 120+ million. Leave and get half of that, at best.

Tough call.

I think he'd get a lot more than a $60MM contract, but I tend to agree with your general point that it's far from guaranteed that he'd do significantly better than $120MM. If I were his agent, I'd advise him to stay put.

I'd also advise him to shave that stupid fucking beard. For some reason when I look at him, I feel like he looks like one of the characters from Fat Albert grown up.

But there was no way that was happening

I agree with this. He's mentioned how the media would hold that "trump card" over his head. I assume that's what he's referring to.

Price is 33 years old. Do you really think another team would give him 3 years and 20+ million a year?

I do, yes.

With the season he just had, I'd expect at least $25MM per for three or maybe even four years.

Hmm maybe. I can't find any player that would be similar to that. I can't find ANY 33 year or older pitcher that got more than 20 mill a year. And Price was pretty good this year but hardly a dominant pitcher.

good call:suds:

David Price told reporters Wednesday that he will not opt out of the final four years of his seven-year deal with the Red Sox.

Price is owed $127 million for the next four years, so it's been assumed for a long time now that he'd be staying put. Price went 16-7 with a 3.58 ERA last season before his hero turn in the World Series.

I'm happy for bawstun. Now they can have another $280 million payroll and continue to pretend they aren't buying championships.

You could be right, and considering the GM most likely to overpay for him is the one he's already working for, you probably are.

Seriously though, Jake Arrieta got a 3yr/$75MM contract last season. His 2017 ERA+ was only three points higher than Price's 2018 mark, and he was 32 compared to Price at 33.

Yu Darvish, at 31 with known elbow issues snagged a 6yr/$126MM ($21MM AAV) contract last season.

Teams are throwing some stupid money around these days.

Again, I do agree with your general point that he should stay put. Apparently his agent does too.

Price's FIP was around 4, not a great sign....I hope he does better next year.

He probably won't, but on the bright side, you guys have him for another four years at about $32MM per.

But Dumbrowski's a genius. He wins championships.

I would think that Price's best case would be a contract similar to Arrieta. It is possible he could get something like that, which would have him leaving 50 million on the table.

You could be right. I've said all along that I agreed with your idea that he shouldn't opt out, I just thought he could get a fair amount more than $60MM. Maybe he couldn't. I don't care any more. Can we talk about something else?

The Giants gave a 31 year old Jeff fucking Samarzdjia a 5 year, $90MM contract and he sure as shit didn’t just come off a hero turn in the WS. Then again, the Giants front office are all idiots.
