So, you don't think he made the call or suggested it?

 I honestly don't know.

If he did make the call, he lied in the presser.

He indicated he didn't know the call. If he didn't tell Beck to keep running it, then he wasn't being the head coach IMO.

He said he didn't actually make the call when pressed on it but he didn't tell him to run either.

So what he said is it was basically his fault because he didn't tell his OC not to pass.

I'm like JJM on this, not a bad call if we had a passing game. But we don't so you can't force one especially when you go two more downs to go inches (3 if counting 4th down). And the fact that Pelini takes it on himself because he doesn't expect his OC to know what to do in that situation is exactly the problem with this team.

He took the heat for the brutal play call on second-and-1 at the Minnesota 41 midway through the fourth quarter. NU had just run for 30 yards in three rushing plays on the drive.

So, naturally, Tim Beck calls for a pass — and quarterback Tommy Armstrong is sacked. Third down becomes a passing down and Armstrong throws incomplete. End of drive.

It was interesting to hear Pelini say he made the call— or approved it. And that’s correct. While fans will want to put this loss on Beck for going away from the running game again, Pelini can overrule Beck.

RA that's the quote from Shatels column of 11/23/14. Believe Shatel or not. Like him or not, I believe that quote because it's now coming from a sportswriter and he's saying something many fans have believed for a long time. Bo is a control freak. And I don't think any sportswriter is going to say that the way Shatel wrote it unless it pretty much was a quote from Bo.

Now insofar as the presser goes? Two options on even how Bo responded----One--He was trying to protect Beck (which is possible) or Two--He was trying to protect his own ass. Why is that more probable? A.--He avoids owning up to making a crappy to making a crappy call. B. He avoids the heat for being the control freak that he is.

You can LOL all you want but the presser isn't the only place sports writers get their info and I honestly believe Shatel would not have put that in his Sunday edit (no less) if he wasn't sure of his facts.

I got no problem with Bo being a control freak and would not be surprised at all if he started calling offense. Hell it seemed like he put Beck on a short leash after McNeese state.

But to think he would throw any of his staff members under the bus? Not going to happen. Hell I wish Bo could of took us to the mountain. I admire his loyalty and his fortitude. The last thing I would expect to hear he did was blame one of his coaches for his decision.

With all that a head coach is responsible for, the worst thing that he can do is try and control everything. You don't have the time or energy. IMO. the better coaches delegate authority because they trust their assistants to do the right thing. I don't think Bo has learned this--witness his almost emotional breakdown from last year.

And for the record, I don't believe he'd throw any of his staff under the bus--that is not what I'm saying. If you don't trust your assistants to do what they are being paid to do, you create and environment where said assistants never truly have the option to teach or be creative.

I still don't have a problem with the play call on 2nd & short. It's done all the time. You don't plan on getting sacked. I don't recall, did TA even have time to to get out of the box and throw it away?

Never mind, I went to the DVR and watched the play. He did not have the time. Both ends were in on him before he could get set. Piss poor blocking ruined that play.

This is another reason why that play call in that situation was a bad call. Our offensive line has been so erratic and it has gotten worse lately. Oh well, Minnesota was the better team, and certainly the better coached team.

No doubt, but there were also plays during the game where they held up pretty well, giving him plenty of time.
