The Keapernick contract was a master stroke and will hopefully lay the foundation for any type of deal we do with Bob in a year or two. It pays the player for performance, yet leaves the team an out if the guy doesnt pan out or ends up oft injured and in need of release.

Interesting Nugget.... the highest QB cap number for 2015... $27.7 million. Any one want to guess who THAT might be??

:laugh3: at the title of the thread! :agree:

I mentioned this on the general NFL board myself. First thing I thought when I saw the details of the contract. Pay for performance? As opposed to mortgage your franchise for 1-3 players, regardless of possible injury? What a concept. Thrilled to see this. Fair to both parties.

Cali you know Im always good for two things on this board, a good debate, and a decent laugh every now and then not at the expense of any one in particular. :D

I'm a big fan of your posts Shark. Regardless of whether we agree, they are always well thought out and backed by logical thinking. Respect. :)

Colin Kaepernick's "$126 Million Contract" Is Remarkably Team-Friendly

Great thread title. He will still be protected to a fair degree against injuries. This isn't totally a pay-for-play contract, but it is relatively team friendly.

The key will be which QBs agree to a deal such as this one. Forget about RG3 - there are several QBs who won't accept this type of deal, and if rebuffed they will have no problem finding an acceptable deal with another team. This type of setup won't work for every team (would be nice if it did - but that isn't reality).

Socal.... The real trick here is if the Skins can improve as a team. Because you are right, some one out there is willing to write another boat anchor style contract for a QB. BUt the QB in question also has to look at where he might be going. Peyton going to Denver was the exception not the rule. The teams willing to write those deals are likely to be the teams who are not very good and need a QB. But yes I can see as to where we will likely write Griffin a deal some where between the Kaepernick/Romo deals on the team friendly aspect, but likely higher than both on the bottom dollar factor.

Agree. I also think that RG3 may surprise you and agree to less in order to build a solid team (especially since he makes a lot of money off the field). You are correct that most QBs would not compromise if the team is not very good - that is one of the main reasons this deal worked with the 49ers. I only hope that we will all be so lucky to have the team move back to being a contender again. That will be fine by me - the rest will take care of itself.

I am not betting on Griffin giving a discount. We know Allen is a skilled negotiater. I think the two guys to watch are Wilson and Luck. Same draft class, they may well set the mark. So much depends on how Griffin performs this year too.

Who knows. However - think of the two most likely scenarios. First -which we all would prefer - would be RG3 being dominant again in which any deal they make is pretty much fine by me. Second - would be RG3 falling short either due to injuries or lack of development. In that case I believe that the team will hold the upper hand & RG3 will need to compromise somewhat.

Of the three QBs you mention I believe that Luck is the most likely to compromise very little mainly since he is the most dominant of the class at this time and means everything to that team. Should be pretty interesting to see how this plays out over the next several years & what impact it will have on future QBs.
