@TSNBobMcKenzie: Wayne Simmonds has agreed to 6 year extension with PHI. Not sure on precise AAV but hearing it's around $4M per year.

Like the years, can live with the hit. I would have loved, say, 3.5. :)

Where are the Flyers getting all this cap space?

Got rid of Carle, Brayden Schenn is somehow on a 3 million cap hit entry level contract so we can bury him in the minors and he isn't subject to waivers coming up or down, Giroux is probably one of the top three most underpaid players in the league (I know Quick is above him), ditched Bobrovsky for draft picks, and we bought out Bartulis.

And there's also the whole it's an extension thing and thus doesn't actually hit this season (Wayne is signed for 1.75 mill through this coming season). And because it's already signed, I would think it would be subject to any reduction in salaries in the coming CBA, so I've no idea why Mr. Simmonds signed it unless he didn't think he'd do better post-negotiations.

Sure glad to see the league wants 5 year term limits on player contracts and Ed Snider (one of the leading owners) gives Simmonds a 6 year extension. How does this sit with you this morning, Gary?

I know Snider has been out to look like one of the bad guys in theowners groups, but I honestly just can't see it. No other owner spends money on his players as freely as Snider does. He even finds them jobs and helps them after their playing days are over to continue to provide for their families. The Flyers are like his hobby and every year he does everything he can to get them in a position to win and money never becomes an issue. If we were operating in the severely red every year I could see him having some problems with what's going on but truthfully I can't see him caring about a few million $ when the guy is a billionare.

According to a report out of Canada, the Flyers and Wayne Simmonds agreed to a six-year contract extension somewhere in the neighborhood of $24 million. Although this reported new extension will nearly double his salary, there is a strong possibility that with the league???s current labor uncertainty, the new deal could ultimately be worth less. For instance, the NHL???s original Collective Bargaining Agreement proposal on July 13 -- which was finally countered by the NHLPA on Tuesday in Toronto -- called for a 24-percent rollback in player salaries. So, if Simmonds signed a $24 million deal, and the NHL gets its way, his new extension is suddenly worth a little more than $18 million. The NHL has also proposed term limits on contracts of 5 years.

Philadelphia Daily News

As I mentioned in another thread-Why offer(Flyer's will save 1 mil per season,if this holds) or sign an extension(Simmonds loses 1 mil per season) before the CBA is settled?

he's a bad guy in the owner's circle because of all that though.. he's as close to being on the players' side as an owner can get IMO

The only other orginization that has taken care of its' players after their careers are over, like the Flyers have is Montreal.

Whether it be a scout, coaching position,ambassador,etc...a lot of former players are still tied to that team.

I know several other teams do it to a lesser degree, but regardless of the numbers,it is a hell of a class act by ownership.

Don't get me wrong by my post above, Snider is a great owner and he probably knows that the league will cave on the five year contract term limit. If anything, I kinda like the fact that he's making Gary squirm.

I think what impresses me most about snider is that he's. A fan first and an owner second. The things he does on the ownership side usually reflect his love of the game though.

Kovy's a Russian...how would you tell?

Well, if his five year plan involves constant skating drills, working on his defense, and watching lots of tape, you are probably alright.

If his Five Year Plan involves the collectivization of agriculture, the elmination of the kulak, and any sort of thing which could be reasonably called "The Great Purge" in a history book, you might want to watch out.
