Since losing my birddog this year, I'm on to the goose fields as of late. You've all seen layout blinds in Cabelas magazine. The Avery Finisher is expensive but absolutely indispensable when it come to hiding in comfort. Here's a couple of pics from last weekend's spread. We bagged out a brace of birds in no time. I'll be making smoked jerky.....yum!

Pretty amazing huh? You lay in these things in complete comfort and the birds fly right into your lap!

...and BTW, I'm a pretty expert waterfowler after 20+ years at it and fucking up a ton of times. There's a great deal of attention to detail required so ask away if you're just getting into it or if you think you'd like to give it a try.

Sitting in the deer blind I saw several groups of Geese flying over. Love that sound.

great camo job on the blind, agree with you, the Avery Finisher is the 1st one I ever got when they originally came out and have gotten most anyone looking for one to get one. Best all around...even use those exact mag shells you have to put around the blinds with the bigfoots and avery motions further away.

If you want a trick we found out to use on flags...go to Flagman.com...get the 10' or 16 ft extention rod or build one out of a cain pole. The flags really pop over anyone else around you.

Yup, I have those magnum shells closer to the blind and four bigfoot standers closest to where they approach. Most days I don't need to flag as the birds leave a local pond and are pretty much locked up as they clear the treeline. When you set up in a field full of muddy goose tracks, it gets as close as possible to automatic! I think flagging is more important in the big fields of the Midwest.

Prolly gonna go out tomorrow morning...another thing to thank Vets for! Been trying to get this local bloke out with me. He let me bag a tom turkey on his farm this past spring and I'm trying to repay the favor.

Pulled a few pounds of smoked goose jerky out of the smokers just yesterday!

...and yeah re the Avery Finisher. We jumped in and out of several of the Cabelas models and none compare.

I just got a lab puppy this year I'm going to bring up and get him MH titled and run him in Open AA qualifiers if he's good enough. I'll be hunting some this year, but this year is all about quail hunting for me.

No. That would never work out here. I have three German Shorthairs I quail hunt with.

if a lab heels very good, it worked for me for 10 years, well 8 years, the 1st two years was working on the "heel" with all the scents.

but trained a shorthair years before labs and would rather use if all I did was upland, damn duck and goose addiction cause the switch to labs.

THREE GSPs!

I'm green.

When I do get a birddog it'll be a German or another Britt.

My older brother had Labs and I have English Pointers. We would hunt those labs in behind the Pointers on Quail and it worked very good. Makes it better for training your Pointers to retrieve also, they want to beat the Labs to the bird.

Why in God's green earth would you want a lab at heel when hunting quail? I need my dogs out there finding the birds.

I'd never do that. Having a flushing dog hunt along side a pointing dog is a great way to teach the pointing dog not to point, or not to hold point.

Sorry, a lab that will heel, no matter how strong scents get. I can call my lab off a running pheasant if he is chasing it out of shooting range.

My lab doesn't go out over 25 yards. Would rather have a dog trip over birds close than find birds out of range.

If they're flushing dogs, absolutely. However, I need my pointing dogs covering big ground in the country I hunt. All open country with sand hills, plum thickets and rag weed. I need them covering the ground so I don't have to.
