That actually makes it hard. Well, not so much "hard" but more complicated.

Basically any name you can think of has already been trademarked by squatters in hopes that the team will pay for the trademark once they inevitably had to change the name.

Now that the time has come where they finally decided to change it, having to find a name that isn't trademarked or negotiate for one that is has slowed things down to where it won't be ready in the 2 months time for the new season.

Even if things went smoothly, changing things in that quick a timeframe was always shaky. There was always a high chance they could announce a new name but still be just "Washington" for this specific year because there wasn't enough time to design new logos and do all the necessary legal work. So they'd be Washington this year and the new name the following year
