last year, the Washington D held Stanford to 238 yards (Stanford's lowest of the season) and 3.66 yards/play (Stanford's lowest of the season). This year, the Washington D is currently the #4 Scoring D in the NCAA (#1 in Pac 12) and the #14 total D in the NCAA (#1 in Pac 12). Coming into the season, Scout.com wrote: "Expectations are soaring for the Washington D entering 2013...Fueling the excitement is the fact that the defense may be harboring as much talent as any point in the previous decade."
some other key players to watch:
MLB #10 John Timu (6-1/235)
--team captain
--2012 honorable mention All-Pac-12
--Scout.com: "Yeah, the 6-1, 231-pound captain delivered a team-best 91 tackles, 3.5 stops for loss, two sacks, four pass defended and two picks in 2012. However, it’s the way he prepares, leads and motivates that really has such a profound impact on the players around him and the program as a whole. The cerebral 6-1, 231-pound team captain is plenty physical for the position, but really excels in the intangibles, such as his approach to the game and the way he prepares. Timu is rarely out of position."
--for his UW career he has 2 sacks, 9 TFL, 166 tackles (91 last year), 3 forced fumbles, 2 INTs, 7 pass breakups
OLB/Nickelback #7 Shaq Thompson (6-2/225)
--2012 honorable mention All-Pac-12
--Scout.com: "The uniquely athletic 6-2, 230-pounder exploded out of the gate as a true freshman last year with 74 tackles, 8.5 stops for loss, two sacks and three interceptions. His versatility and speed will allow the staff to use him liberally on blitzes, or to blanket tight ends in coverage."
--for his young UW career so far he has 2.5 sacks, 9 TFL, 100 tackles, 3 INTs, 3 pass breakups, 1 blocked kick, 1 fumble return
--as a recruit, he was a consensus 5-star, rated the #1/1/2/3 Safety, and #3/4/6/16 overall recruit
--he had offers to Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Michigan, Oregon, Washington, UCLA, Cal, Arizona State, etc
FS #1 Sean Parker (5-10/195)
--team captain
--2012 honorable mention All-Pac-12
--Scout.com: "Parker is a tone-setter for the Huskies on D, bringing an unexpected level of ferocity and echoing sticks...he's the emotional leader of the secondary"
--for his UW career he has 10 INTs (3 this year) and 195 tackles (91 in one season)
--as a recruit he was rated the #6/5/16 safety and the #49/81/157 overall recruit
--he had offers to Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Oregon, Stanford, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Nebraska, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State, Minnesota, UNC, Georgia Tech, Washington, Cal, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, etc
