Was 1985 Dwight Gooden the most dominant year ever by a pitcher?

Whereas, Nolan Ryan for the bulk of his career was one of the worst command pitchers in the league, leading the league in walks eight times and a lifetime walk rate of 4.7 walks per 9 IP.

Which makes his career even more astounding.

No, not really.

C'mon man......other pitchers with the record number of walks AND wild pitches, would NEVER have lasted 23 years, or won as many games, EVER.
While I may be a homer about him, you on the other hand, or not giving him nearly enough credit....imho.

That's fair. And his W-L was hurt by the teams he pitched for. I just think a lot of people need to realize you can't gauge a pitcher's "dominance" solely by strikeouts and no-hitters. I still think Ryan was a great pitcher, and 5000+ innings is nothing to sneeze at.

Blasphemy.

no, not really. Almost all of Koufax's career value came in those six years. His 63-66 stretch is certainly up there as one of the best four year stretches by a pitcher ever, but he had no longevity whatsoever.

Koufax has his place in the HOF imo, but there's a fair amount of people that consider him the greatest (or at least one of). And for a guy with such a short career, I just don't see it at all.

A shame he couldn't compile more seasons. I think we would be remiss to ignore him however. Those four years were widely celebrated with good reason. It's a legitimate question though as to at what point do we stop celebrating, and start overrating?

Sandy was a bonus baby and could not be sent to the minors without clearing waivers. This hurt his development. It did take a while to control his wildness but it all came together in 1961.

1962 was cut short due to injury but he still won 19 games. 63-66 was the Highlight of his career.

Granted it was short but he was considered the best of his era.

It really was close to 6. 1961-66.

As much as I love Pedro, even I think his relatively meager innings total keeps him from truly being considered the greatest pitcher of all-time. I think he's a clear cut below Maddux and Randy Johnson, and especially Clemens.

He had 14 in 1962. He had 19 in 1964. He also pitched in a time where 20+ win seasons were common.

Steroid era. Everyone is suspect. Remember ARod never tested positive. No one is above suspicion.
I dont think you will find outside of nyc to say pedro used anything.

Half the reason hes so revered is for doing what he did in that era vs guys on horse grade steroids.
