Does anyone under 25 understand how different the game was in the past:L
If you put Marino on an NFL Team today 1984 would have been an average year for him

Wow now...

That might keep Marino from dumping 60 TD’s a year- but he’d still have huge numbers even by today’s standards.

The passing game is also a lot smarter than it was in the 80’s and 90’s.

It’s also never been easier to be an OC... defenses may be smarter, but defense has never been harder.

It's not true? Are you kidding? Do you know how much harder it was to pass the ball in that era? Don't you think there is a reason that almost every QB in the top 10 in passer rating has played recently? Guys in the top 20 All Time: Matt Schaub, Andy Dalton, Kaepernick, Mariotta, Cousins. Jameis Winston is #24 All Time for God's sake...

99, 90, 84, 83- one of the best defense in nfl. and there were other years when defense was good.

Yep...rookie and SB yr they did have a good DEF...I'll give you '90, but ironically lost in a shoot out to BUF...keep in mind that BUF squad went to 4 consecutive SBs during that stretch.

'98...Marino was having arm and knee issues towards the end, not the same player. Again, for such a good DEF in the reg season, they got run over by DEN.

It is hard to explaine why his offence wasn't better. But what really defiine's the carrier of a QB?

Not really- if anything they’d go down with how modern offenses are designed. His attempts probably wouldn’t change a whole ton; Miami was ahead of most of the league at the time in leveraging the pass.

maiby. but modern defenses is more adapted to passhappy teams than in marinos prime (espesially in 83-86) ...
Defenses were allowed to beat the shit out of QBs when Marino played.

What are you? 10?

Ok, did pattern matching exist really back then? I am pretty sure it didn't (well, its nascent form maybe with the Browns towards the end of Marino's career, but that's about it); that doesn't mean being able to mug the WR at the LOS didn't more than make up for that back then. You're really underselling how different things are in the 1980's or even just the 1990's.

Defenses come in and out of fashion like anything else. The Bears clowned the entire league with the 46 once. Nobody would run a 46 as if it were their base unless they want to be clowned today.

It's not "raw," just different.

You're assigning causality to something that may not have one. Variance is a thing. Age doesn't stop, etc.

If Mahomes throws 40 TD's this year, is that defenses figuring him out too?
