"JapersRink: I'm hearing that Arturs Irbe won't be back as #Caps' G coach next season."

Twitter / JapersRink: I'm hearing that Arturs Ir ...

Probably should be posted on the caps board, but oh well. He was hired for varly when he spoke no English and he had a bad relationship with the prior jolie coach. My guess would be he goes back to Russia and plays in the KHL

Personally, I wanted the flyers to go after him as he is an rfa, over pay for him, give us a 1st and 3rd, then watch him miss 30%+ of every season...but that was very hopeful :D

Well.....

If it does happen, it cuts down on one big contract extension for the future and allows the Caps a little bit of an easier plan with the other two. Keep Neuvy as the starter, bring in a vet backup on the cheap and let Holtby get regular reps in Hershey. Two is much easier to work than three.

As for the draft picks, they would have been nice but the Caps are pretty young and would have a tough time fitting big time rookies into any cap system at this point.

IMO Holtby is the best goalie in the Caps system anyway. This would just clear space for him next year.

Use the draft picks in trades!

I think Caps' nation is generally ambivalent about Varly. On the one hand, I think his reaction time and talent is among the 3-4 best in the NHL, but his positioning still needs improvement. And more importantly, his health is constantly an issue.

I'd be happy for them to re-sign him because I don't think 3 young goalies is a bad thing, but I think it would have to be for $1.5 mil/per or less. I think that's entirely possible given how few starts he had last year. Given his talent to his likely contract cost, I hope they keep him. But Neuvy/Holtby would be just fine.

Sorry to see Archie go (if it happens). He has been a great goalie coach to these young guys and he's very popular on the Capitals coaching staff with the players.

The problem with resigning Varly would be he would get most likely a multi-year deal, something that would handcuff the caps. If he goes to the KHL, Caps keep his rights, so it could work out beter for them in the end

Good point. Though with as few games as he played last year and previous injuries, I don't think he's getting anything close to $2 million that would handcuff us.

End of the day - Neuvy for 3 years at just over a mil and Holtby is a potential big talent. GREAT situation.

Even a position handcuff in net. Say Holtby somehow takes the starting job, then we'd have either Varly or Neuvy in Hershey for basically 2 years. And at that point trading them wouldn't really get much in return...

Well, how much do you think they'd offer Varly? I would guess it would something like $1.1-1.5 million/year for 2 years.

I think Neuvy is probably going to be the starting goalie for all next season. Then again, we thought Varly was going to be last year...

Something like that. Varly wants starting goalie money and wants to be the starting goalie, his agent said that earlier in the year. He's not going to get that from the Caps, and he's most likely not going to get that anywhere in the NHL.

I agree, I think Neuvy will be the starter, but I agree that a vet backup should be signed so Holtby isn't just sitting on the Bench. And if Neuvy were to get injured, Holtby would be the starter even if he was just called up. That'd be my plan if I were the caps though and Varly does walk away
