So, one would expect a person to be named after the fiber, to have grown up in the South.

Yeah, I got that, but I thought he was trying to be funny rather than observational. I thought it could be taken as, "hmm... interesting that he's not a slave..." I didn't get it as funny (though, I don't mean to imply I was offended).

Well, since they weren't prepared to talk about his game during the broadcast, they probably hadn't done a background check on his genealogy, and seen where and how his ancestors lived.
