I think the Bears and their fans were tired of the constant chatter from Urlacher without the corresponding production. He became a cancer and now he's paying the price. No team wants a critical, declining cancer on their team.

Not this fan.

He was battling back from a shredded knee last year, and still had a decent year. I felt like he was just getting his groove back when he tweaked his hammy. Still had a pick 6, couple a FF's and recoveries...Bears shoulda got this done, and signed him to a respectable 1-year deal, if for no other reason then they don't even have a semblance of a Plan B.

We now need 2 starting LB's.

It's the end of an era. I've been reading some mock drafts and this Brown kid out of Kansas St has been mentioned in a couple as a 1st round possibility. There were comparisons made to Ray Lewis. All I know is, where is Hunter Hillenmeyer when you need him.

Great one - end of an era. I still think he's got a couple of seasons in him.

I was a big Urlacher fan, but he's been far from elite since about 2010, and Briggs has been better than him since at least 2007. It's tough to see him go without winning a title, but the truth is that he would have only been our seventh best defensive player anyways.

It's always about Urlacher and his damned pride. There was no way this was going to end nicely because he's a superstar in his mind.

He's a prideful dude, no doubt, but he had publicly stated that he knew a paycut was in order, and was willing to negotiate. The Bears brass knew he wouldn't take vet minimum, and an ultimatum, is definitely not negotiating. That coupled with it being a chickenshit way off letting him go. Be direct and just say ya don't want him back, don't grease the public with all the right words, then dump him in a backhanded way.

And ftr, the $2 million dollar contract is a bit misleading. It basically would add up to him making about $500,000.00 after taxes. I know that's plenty of money, but a football season is taxing, particularly at 35, plus he prolly makes that on one commercial shoot.

I think the Bears' brass made a tough decision, and I can respect that. The way they went about doing it, was greasy and disrespectful.

I don't think anything less than offering Urlacher two years and $5M per would have been perceived as "respect" by him. They were in a no-win situation but no doubt relieved to have his non-stop bickering and declining play a thing of the past. You can upgrade that position in the first round of the draft.

He's on the record as saying that they shot high with their initial offer because they knew they wouldn't get it. In a radio interview, he even stated that he was willing to play for ~$3million/year. Once they saw the Bears figure, he wanted to use that as a base and have incentives to reach his number. It was a take it or leave it and for someone who has busted his ass for and given over a decade of his life to a team, it is disrespect.

And if he were worth it, they'd have gladly paid him that much. The fact is, probably half of the $2M offer was to show him respect for his career. As I said, I bet the front office is delighted to part ways with him and upgrade the position with a non-asshole.
