Jonathan Villar is probably the best player you've never heard of this season, and the Brewers got him on the cheap last December. Heading into tonight, he's batting .281 with 16 homers, 56 runs batted in, 58 steals, and 75 walks. If the Brewers had a record that was worth a damn, he might just garner a few MVP votes. I truly believe Villar was deserving of the NL starting shortstop nod over Addison Russell at this year's All-Star Game, even if Russell may have more long-term upside because of his age (22).

As a Cubs fan, I believe the NL Central is a better place when the Brewers are competitive. They have, in my opinion, the best home ballpark in the National League. Milwaukee is just a great atmosphere for baseball, and Villar will continue to be a good building piece for them, even as he's transitioned to third base after the call-up of top prospect Orlando Arcia.

In Philadelphia, Cesar Hernandez is making his mark on a young Phillies ballclub. There are no "wow" skills with Hernandez, as he has been caught stealing 13 times on the season. Hernandez, though, is a selective hitter and plays a good second base as well. Here in 2016, he's hitting .293 with a .367 on-base percentage, leads the league with 11 triples, and is second on the Phillies with a 3.2 WAR in spite of those 13 caught steals. And though he's not very big, perhaps there is some late-blooming power on the way, as four of Hernandez' six homers have come since mid-August. Not too many second sackers are going to be as good as Chase Utley during his time in Philly, but Hernandez is proving himself to be a more-than capable replacement. He is currently slugging .397 on the season.
