Unless the plan is to pass on every down, do you honestly want to spend pick #17 on a guy who by all accounts is NOT a workhorse type and by your own view point adds singularly to the passing game?

Dude had 1600 yards rushing, 300 receiving and 16 combined TDs. My main gripe is his fast rise up the boards. Secondary to that is, with his receiving ability i think he would lend to rather than curb Grudens pass happy ways.

Where is the part that I said I wanted to pick him #17. I don't want to pick any RB with 17th pick.

Oh I do see a need for D-line. What i dont see is a D-line projected at 17 that is better than the RBs projected to also be there at 17. I also see a metric shit ton of D-line projected to be available in the 2nd, 3rd and even 4th round that would be better than Big Ziggy for this team. So if Myles Garrett some how slips to 17, IM all over it. But nost of what i see projected is us taking an ILB, or Safety at 17... and while we could use either I think the RB is better and might help keep our defense off the field a little more. And Im not a fan of reaching on a D-lineman for need over a RB which is also just as big a need, and the guy there might be more talented.

Well for starters that's what this thread is all about, Here's the Thread title: Ugh Redskins Loom For Christian McCaffrey .......and using that reference you wrote this: "Which is exactly why I like McCaffrey. I see him enhancing a passing game that I do not think Gruden is going to take the pedal off of. Of course Cook could be that guy too. Don't know about the kid from LSU. We already have 2 or 3 yards and a cloud of dust, why get a more expensive one.

Sorry Sty, you are correct. I commented in the text of this particular thread. If you have read anything else I have posted you would know my position on RB is draft one later.

I do reserve the right to be a giddy fan should we draft a RB who turns into a star. Good now?

Again dude, Im basing it off of what i have seen him do consistently on the field. So no it doesnt worry me. Too much weight is put on the underware olympics in my opinion.

And to be honest I think a few posters around here are looking for any solid reason to not draft him because they have developed the idea that it is better to draft a good defensive player over what could be a great RB because we need defensive help more. IM just not a fan of that logic. If we were talking JJ Watt over a RB sure. But I think we are looking at more bang for our buck if one of the true starting RBs in this draft were taken at 17, and i dont expect Fournette to be there.

Maybe some people put too much weight on the combine but its useful information. Dismissing it is just as foolish as making it the end all be all. A 9th percentile athlete is really bad for a RB. Im pretty sure theres never been a pro bowl RB who tested that poorly. Theres also never been one drafted in the 1st round who tested that poorly. This has to be at least considered. At best it makes him a much more risky prospect than anybody on here seems to want to admit. And this is on top of character issues. Hes just not a cant miss prospect like people want him to be. He can bust just as easily as McDowell or Reddick.

Also the logic isnt that we need defensive help more so thats what we should draft. The logic is that a defensive player is worth more and more valuable to the team. Those are 2 different things. Its also pretty hard to argue against that.

OK so I get that logic. But it still comes down to, lets take a possibly less talented player because he would in the opinion of some be more valuable to the team. And the bonus of that would be also taking a likely less talented RB prospect in the bargain. Personally Im thinking the RB would be more valuable to the team because it SHOULD allow our offense to be less predictable, and right now the best way to help our defense is to control the clock. Which an improved ground game will do.

I don't think it does mean taking a less talented player. Its between very similarly ranked prospects. And positional value still matters. If we had no punter and the best player in the draft was a punter would you still take him in the first round? I don't think so. Somebody like McDowell has at least as much upside as Cook and they're both risky. But one is way more valuable than the other if he hits.

Cook is routinely considered a player that should and likely will go in the first round.

McDowell has been forecast any where from us at 17, to some where in the second round. And primarily he is being forecast to us at 17 as a NEED pick. The primary thinking on the Skins draft for months has started and ended at "The Redskins must improve their defense" As such we have been projected to take every DL, ILB, or Safety that some one thinks will be available at 17.

Only recently has the idea that a RB might be the better pick come up. I get it, some just dont place that high a value on a RB, and feel the team would be better off with ANY upgrade on the D-line. I get it you dont think a game changer at RB would be more valuable. I just dont think we should reach to fill D-line in the first round, nor do I think we should pass on a game changer for the offense out of some sense that well we need to improve the defense more than we need an upgrade at RB.

Theres also talk that Cook doesnt get drafted in the first round. Both guys are talented players with a lot of upside and a lot of risk.

I dont think we should reach to go defense either. I just dont think we'll have too.

Did we hear Carolina say they want him at 8?

Or are they just interested in him, perhaps in the 2nd?

We might not reach, but it still might be forcing the pick. And by that I mean, if it has been predetermined that we need to use the first round pick to improve the defense no matter who is on the board when we pick.. to me thats forcing the pick and thus some what of a reach.

I think thats just an excuse. Im not eyeing any one player in particular. But theres plenty of guys that could be available there that are better options than Cook. And even if we were "forcing it" as youre saying, how would that be a bad thing if we're taking a prospect that deserves to go there?

Because depending on who is there, IM not sold that there is a player that deserves the pick more than Cook if he is there. Now mind you I actually dont think Cook will be there at 17, so it might be a moot point in any case. But talent wise I think he is one of the top 10 players in this draft, and I think he changes the dynamic of the offense for the positive and thus makes the team better. s i have also stated, I think the talent drop off from the defensive guys we will likely have a shot at with the 17, is not as steep as the Drop off from the RBs that might be there for us at 17, and the guys who will be there at 49 or later.

You think there is a bigger talent drop from the top three to Kamara and Foreman than from Reddick/Foster to McMillan?

Again, I dont think Reddick or Foster will be there at 17... but of the guys I do expect to be there... McDowell and Peppers... I dont think there is a huge drop to the next guy.

Kamara by most accounts is a 3rd round pick in about half the mocks out there. Mainly for the same reason you are so against a RB in the first... people think you can find a game changer easily in the later rounds.
