Just wondering when is Trout a free agent??

After 2017, when he'll be 26.

The real question how much do the Angels offer to try to lock him up before free agency, and how soon.

He was born august 1991- so he will be 27 when he is a free agent an 28 just after midseason of first year of new contract... 10 years would be until 37-38... for that type of contract for that long, he would need to become more of a power hitter than a speed hitter... especially of course for 50 mil per year... even though he is better than cano, i dont see him getting a better contract than cano did this season...

Well, there was someone with a better OPS+.

I suppose he meant that if Trout wants $500m, he should be #1 across the boards?

By the time this comes to be, Cabrera will likely be retired. But, I agree with your logic.

I did not mean to imply that the Angels are considering this contract, I am merely putting out their what a long term contract would look like when they do negotiate. Cano just got his money and he will be like 31 or 32 when the contract goes into effect. Over the last few years Cano has been worth around 30 mil a year but he could only get 24mil a year since he'll only be in his prime for 2/5ths of the contract. Trout is like 21 and is by far the best player in the game.

There isn't a org in the league using those numbers from fangraphs to hand out contracts. There is a difference between theoretical value, and real world value. The market doesn't support 30 million a year, let alone 50 million a year.

He will easily top Cano's contract...

Better player overall, actually outside of Miggy, he is the best player in the game.

He will get close to 30M a season, easily.

He would hit free agency in October 2017, so wouldn't that make him 26? That last time I can think of a top free agent being that young was A-Rod who I think was 25.

Regardless, it's always an interesting situation...do the Angels try to lock him up asap and give him a big deal (buy out his arbitration years with another 5+ years extension on top of that) so he doesn't even think about testing free agency, or do they let it play out and wait to see what happens with him , just to be sure in the event he ends up with a fate like Grady Sizemore.

Nobody chasing around little balls or swatting at them is worth $50 mill/year.

I know that, but I can see him getting more than 7 years. Especially at age 26 and not 31.

One scenario which I think they can offer is a 10 or so year deal, which buys out his 3 arbitration years (2015, 2016, 2017), and has a 7 year extension on top of that.

So if that were the scenario, it terms of contract length, it would be similar to signing him to a 7 year deal at age 26

They may look to do that, but I doubt it. Why pay him earlier than you're supposed to? Especially when he's under team control.

To incentive him not to go out on the free agent market in a few years and seek a potentially bigger deal from another team.

Rays did that with Longoria and Mets did that with Wright early in their careers...give them a long term deal in which they'll be making a lot more in their team controlled years in exchange for staying long after their normal free agency year.

50M a year? That is ridiculous.

Not to mention, with that much going to one player, the Angels would have to surround Trout with a bunch of marginal/cheap veterans and/or cheap prospects. With Seattle getting better, it's hello 4th place for the Angels. Trout can still only play one position, and still only gets to bat once every nine spots in the order.

Which is why one of my baseball pet peeves is when someone says 'player X carried the team' in MVP debates.

Except that a big part of trouts game is his speed... teams dont like giving big/long contracts to speed guys in fear that they will lose the speed when they reach a certain age... Of course there are players like ellsbury that still get their deals, but it is just not as common...

Trout is of course much more than speed, but to get the absurdly large contract(better than cano) he may have to become a better hitter first...

yeah, that .432 OBP and 179 OPS+ at the age of 21/22 is very ordinary.

Lol

Yup. Don't forget that position players don't pitch either.

Insane. No one is worth 50 million a year. I don't care if you are the love child of Babe Ruth and Ted Williams.

Sign at Angels Satdium:

Soda - $4
Cup - $16

Beer - $6
Cup - $19

Hot Dog - $5
Bun - $15

I know you're just joking, but player salaries and concessions have almost no correlation whatsoever. If anything, it's the other way around... player salaries rise as concessions do. Owners try and charge the most they think people will be willing to pay for tickets, parking, concessions, etc.
