Italian bridge collapses in Genoa, killing at least 22, official says

Two years before the deadly collapse, an engineer said the bridge was bound for disaster. Antonio Brencich, who is also a professor at the University of Genoa, said in July 2016 that there were problems with the structure, Ingegneri.info reported.

Yah it seems that was the govt line in their press release when it made local news there (savona - 75 km from Genoa) ... not structural ... just cosmetic

but todays events will certainly lead to some public hysteria

They have a lot of investigating to do here, for sure. Structures are capable of failing due to design flaws but I've found with bridge failures it's usually something humans did after the fact that cause failure and the resto work that was going on probably led to something.

Yep totally agree with you and per what has been reported it seems to be the case here. I am just amazed even with the warnings back in 2016 (not sure if it was before or after the repairs) that this wasn't escalated more. Makes me wonder if they were escalated prior but obviously a horrible oversight post repairs.

Yeah that rebar at the bottom is more what caught my eye lol. Even if it's harmless, like, shit, pick it up.

It's like when chunks of concrete fall off the Gardiner here - people always get concerned for the roadway and that it may collapse but really the only danger to anybody is of the actual concrete falling onto a car or pedestrian. I really can't think of a collapse of any kind, bridge or building, caused because a support pillar or column gave out due to reinforcing failure. It's usually the decking becoming detached or caving for some reason.

The only instance I can think of was this one in Portugal in 2001 but it was caused by unrestricted sand extraction from the river bed that destabilized the footings (along with some ignored engineers inspection reports in the years before it happened):

I saw that bridge with my own eyes a few months after it collapsed. It's surreal to just see dangling roadway. The river current was so fast they found bodies in France.

This is why the old Greenfield bridge in Pittsburgh had the bridge under the bridge to catch all the cement.
