One of the most intriguing players on the 2018 Washington Redskins’ roster has yet to receive much media attention this spring. Based on various conversations in recent days, some with league sources and others more generally, expect more focus on cornerback Fabian Moreau.

More non-injury questions exist in the secondary than any other unit on the roster. The primary queries involve who fills in at corner for former Redskins players Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland. There are several candidates, including holdover Quinton Dunbar and free agent addition Orlando Scandrick. The one offering the most potential barely played the position last year.

Washington selected Moreau in the third round of the 2017 draft. He may have heard his named called during the first round if not for a pectoral injury suffered during his Pro Day at UCLA. Impressive athleticism combined with cover skills drew attention.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock excitedly said, “I absolutely love this pick” when the Redskins used the 81st overall pick on Moreau. “I had him as a first-round corner before he tore his pec. … He’s got speed, he’s got length, he’s got ball skills. He just needs to be more consistently physical. … All I know is big picture Washington just got itself a starting corner.”

The primary holdup for many with Washington acquiring quarterback Alex Smith in January is that trade with Kansas City cost them Fuller, who turned into a stellar slot corner last season. Like Moreau, Fuller also dropped into the third round because of injury. He had microfracture knee surgery during his final season at Virginia Tech. Fuller played more on defense as a rookie than Moreau, who primarily worked on special teams. Injuries wrecked the Redskins last season, but the corners largely held up so Washington could bring Moreau along slowly.

That Dunbar and Scandrick exist means the Redskins don’t need to thrust Moreau into the starting lineup immediately. Ideally, he forces their hand. That’s because the 6-foot corner with 4.35 40-yard speed and a 38-inch vertical jump has the physical traits desired. That’s why side discussions about sleeper candidates keep turning to the cornerback from UCLA.

The Redskins signed seven of their eight 2018 draft selections to contracts on May 10. The exception, third-round pick Geron Christian, remains one.

There is no cause for alarm. These rookie deals are fairly boilerplate. The salary cap website Over The Cap already has the baseline of a dealfor Christian, who went 74th overall. The offensive tackle out of Louisville entered the week one of 47 drafted players – 18.3 percent of the 256 selections — yet to sign. That group includes Giants running back Saquon Barkley, the second overall selection in the 2018 draft. The two players drafted immediately on both sides of Christian, Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker and Chiefs defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi also remain unsigned.

There is one potentially curious part of Christian’s scenario. As of Monday, he had yet to sign with an agent according to the NFLPA’s website. One source told The Sports Capitol that Christian might handle his own negotiation with help from a family member. Even with the straightforward aspect of the rookie contracts, agents help in other aspects of the transition from college to pro life. Christian is going without such help for now.

Christian participated in the team’s rookie camp and two weeks’ worth of Organized Team Activities (OTA). With Trent Williams, Morgan Moses, Ty Nsekhe and T.J. Clemmings all recovering from various injuries, Washington used Christian at left tackle with the first-team.

The organization announced Tuesday that a Super Bowl rings ceremony to honor replacement players from the 1987 Redskins will occur on June 12. Those players were not celebrated at the time despite going 3-0 under coach Joe Gibbs during the strike-shortened season. Charley Casserly, who was the assistant general manager at the time, will host the overdue ceremony.

The announcement coming the morning after the Capitals took a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup final led some to question the timing. Should Washington finish off Las Vegas in Thursday’s Game 5 or at home Sunday in Game 6 for the city’s first major sports championship since the Redskins’ title in 1992, the parade could be Tuesday.

Put down the tinfoil hats. The Redskins planned this event several weeks back. It will coincide with next week’s team minicamp in Ashburn, which is the final official practice before training camp kicks off July 26 in Richmond.

should be an interesting summer to see how things shake out. i think samajie continues to improve, and has a solid year two.

me too , you have to give mid round choices time to learn the game and adjust . roullier may struggle this year (or may not ) but he has to learn the pro game so we have to allow them to do it . davis could make a jump as well . trey quinn is getting hyped but he may need time too as could stroman

i think we have been putting together some decent drafts since 2015
