A friend of mine told me about a trade offer the Yanks apparently made to the giants. My friend heard it from a friend of his who is a scout for the Yanks. I am not sure how much credence I put in it, but it is interesting...

Giants get...

Robinson Cano

Yanks get

Matt Cain and Barry Zito (Yanks taking Zito's ENTIRE contract)

The word is that Sabean asked for Banuelos to be added to the deal.

I told my friend that the Giants would likely not take the deal because Cain is too much of a BEAST, and Sabean's counter of Banuelos was his way of saying, "Fuck Off".

I don't know how realistic that trade ever was...it would leave us with a GAPING hole in our rotation and nobody to bring up to fill it. Cano gets $10M/$14M/$15M 2011-13 and Cain gets $11M/$15M 2011-12. We'd get relief of $18.5M/$19M/$20M/$7M and that's obviously the enticement.

Maybe if they also took MST?

That'd leave us with a 2011 rotation of Timmy/Bum/Song/Chez/Runzler

2012: Timmy/Bum/Song/Chez/Surkamp
2013: Timmy/Bum/Chez/Surkamp/Wheeler

2013 batting order:
CF Brown
2B Cano
C Posey
3B Panda
1B Belt
LF Neal
RF Peguero
SS Panik

I dunno....

I would LOVE to have Cano, but losing Cain hurts, and Zito is still a nice back of the rotation guy. I am not sure I want to throw Surkamp into the MLB just yet with a solid top 5 spot. MAYBE next year, but I would like to see how he handles the offensive PCL first (or after a trial run in SF).

It is also possible that Sabes knows that Zito will not accept a trade to NY (I have no knowledge of this, I am just throwing it out as a hypothetical) and threw Banuellos' name out as a feeler to gauge the Spanks reaction. If the Spanks were interested, maybe the Giants make an offer to Zito that he cant refuse (throwing him an extra 5M or something would be worth it to get Banuellos in the fold).

Assuming Zito WOULD accept the deal as offered, though, I think the Giants were right in refusing it.

On a side note, I am not sure Spankee Stadium is the ideal location for Cain. He is a good flyball pitcher who knows how to avoid the long ball, but Spankee Stadium is a jet-stream. You need to be careful with who you bring in there...

To be honest, I don't know why the Yank$ would do this deal. Sure they have an unlimited amount of money, but Zito would get destroyed pitching in the AL East. He's one of the few pitchers I'd honestly say that about and mean it since I think the AL East is overhyped. Cano for Cain I'd say is about equal value but them picking up Zito's contract makes this overkill.

I think the trade is interesting, but I also agree that it does not make much sense for either team.

It decimates the Giants rotation (which essentially decimates the Giants) and it gives the Spanks a fly-ball pitcher. I like dumping Zito's contract, if we lose Cain, we really don't NEED to lose Zito's contract.

Cutting off the nose to spite the face.

I'm assuming this would be the first step in moving Jeter off of SS. This is an interesting trade, Cano is a damn good player and has really matured these last couple years. But Cainer is a beast and is one of the best pitchers in the game. It would cause a major hole in our rotation. Maybe a third team would have to be involved to bring a starter back to us.

On a talent for talent level (not looking at specifics of team needs) I think the deal is close. Cain is more valuable than Cano, but losing Zito's contract counteracts that.

If the Giants had a solid 7 in the org, I think MAYBE they make the trade. But removing 2 of our top 6 is too big a hit to take.

Dirty for Cano. Would you do that?

Holy smokes yes...but for the Yankees to even consider that, we'd have to add in Surkamp and Crawford and I would do that deal too.

No I don't think either can, but it's not a problem this year, and they can trade him in the offseason if we got Cano

Which we will not.

No way Durty ever plays for a NY team. Durty needs a small market team with an average or better offense.

No way the Spanks are even interested in Durty, even as a throw in.

The Yankees would want either Cain or Lincecum and that's probably it of our starters. They need innings eaters since their rotation is in rough shape. Sanchez might be able to be just as dominant over there, but he would never give them as many innings on a consistent basis as they need.
