yea, i am a big yankee fan... Love Gehrig... and of course his speach... cant be a yankee fan without hearing it at least once...

but i dont think i have Gehrig as a top 10 ever..( I MIGHT, really havent thought about it)... kind of surprised he mad it to this run off...
I acknowledge his “greatness”, but I never REALLY considered him at this level. Looking at his numbers, though, and he is better than I thought.

I agree, still not at this level though, but his inclusion is no atrocity.

And who would have been playing with Ruth? Gehrig deserves his fame and placement within the top 10 Yankees.

huh?? why are we lowering the bar to say something nobody has said?? He is definitely a top 5 Yankee player of all time... and his speach is the most iconic Yankee moment of all time...

neither of that makes him a top 10 baseball player of all time... He could be, i am not saying he is not YET...

ty cobb was the only player of these three that was considered the best of his generation...

so TC is the answer.... if we want to complicate this, and talk defense and base running, then Cobb is so much better than the other 2, that the other 2 should not even be honoured in the same poll...
If not for the Babe and possibly a couple lost years bc of his disease…who knows with Lou. Cobb is absolutely in this discussion it isn’t fair to say he is the best by far just bc he was best in his generation. Not to say his generation was more watered down but I don’t like basing it on that fact.

Lou was every bit of a legendary hitter like Cobb and he had the power. Cobb has defense on him and baserunning but the same could be said for a ton of power hitters. Lou is in the same breath as Teddy as far as a pure hitter but I think Teddy is the best pure hitter of all-time.

I voted Lou but would be fine with either. At this spot is where there is quite the gap anyway and the next 2-3 spots will tough to vote regardless

Top 10 Yankees of course. 5th best player of all time though?

There really is not a gap yet. Problem is that we suck at this rankings game.

Inconsistency is king here. Willie mays gets 2 because of overall and extra curricular things.

Ted Williams gets 3 because of offense and military

The only reason Lou is even a question here is because of ALS and his speech.

It’s all about the personal preferences and the arguing. Who does the ranking game better?

he gets the legend treatment for sure... but its weird... he played most of his career in the same lineup as Ruth... so, he wasnt even the best player on the team....

That's an odd & imo unfair criteria. He trails only Ruth, Williams & Bonds in career OPS+

I think any poll just bastardizes the lists. I’d take anyone’s individual list over a poll list.

I would be interested in MY list. But I wouldn’t give a shit about anyone else’s, as I suspect would be the case with most others. A ”consensus” list will have some holes, of course, but I think it offers more insights than individuals’ lists.

I disagree. Polls by definition will be the most popular choice. Groups are dumber than individuals because it has no consistency and is a victim of group think.

you can tell even by who just posts on these threads. Some are ops+ guys, some are WAR guys, some are legends and stories guys. Some treat it like a popularity contest.

All those lists would be more interesting than an inconsistent list that is not just all over the place. But also has no rhyme or reason to it.

Polls are a fun experiment, no doubt. And it is nice to see how this board ranks. But I truly think any one of us can do a better job than any poll
