Sean Avery reported to CT of the AHL, taking $1.9M off the cap hit for both the Rags and the Stars.

Bob Mackenzie: NYR like getting the cap space. DAL not so much because when Adam Pardy comes off IR, DAL will be below salary floor. Need to sign a player.

Avery out of the NHL AND it fucks Dallas?

I give thanks a day or two late.

I must still be pissed because all I read was "The Rangers once again use a loophole to circumvent the salary cap"

I get the joke, but LOL at thinking not paying almost $2mill to a pile of douche like Avery hurts Dallas. Yeah we have to sign a player, but will actually get something out of that player...unlike GAvery.

the team that takes the ice in their next game will not be over the salary cap.. imo its not cap circumvention..

Don't forget Redden.

It ticks me off too. Teams like the Rangers can afford to make mistakes other teams can't make. To me that's an unfair advantage. Hopefully it will be taken care of in the next CBA.

Well Drury has never played a game in the AHL.

There should be a penalty for dumping a big salary in the AHL. Redden was a huge mistake that they will really never have to pay for competitively. Hopefully it is addressed in the next CBA.

However, Avery is a pretty marginal player at this point and has caused problems in just about every room he's been in. I don't a huge problem with him being sent down.

i just dont see it as that simple.. you have to have a way out of a contract because sometimes its not the teams fault.. the buyout penalty is too stiff for teams (penalty for twice the duration of the contract!?) and players aren't going to let them make the buyout penalty easier on teams because now, more so than ever, they want a gauruntee that they will be taken care of even if they get hurt.. so players wont want to get bought out

i think you're talking about kovy with the contract stuff and the devils getting screwed.. IMO that's a completely different situation because the contract was ridiculous (no more so than others, like hossa or pronger, that should have been punished too, i agree w/ you there), but it was actually trying to circumvent the cap, which is why the devils got punished

waiving players to the AHL and taking their hit off the salary cap is the only way i can think of where the player can be guarunteed to make his money and the GM's can get out from a bad contract.. i agree it gives the richer teams an advantage because they have the financial backing to literally pay for mistakes (or for when a player shits the bed), i just dont see a better way of doing it, or at least, a way both sides will agree to do it

Thats my beef right there, and my only beef...the Devils did the same thing other teams did and are the only ones to be fucked. Rangers are using another loophole, more than once, and its ok.

ya that was BS.. totally agree w/ you.. it was structured in the same fasion that a great deal of contracts have been structured.. front loaded big time with garbage on the 'retirement years'.. the devs just went a little more extreme with it.. shouldn't matter the extremity, the concept is circumventing the cap and all of those contracts should be negated

and on a personal note, it should be retroactive, so the flyers lose that awful pronger contract

I don't really have a problem with any of the ultra-long contracts (including the rejected Kovalchuk one) with one caveat; they need to account for inflation of the cap. For example if a player retires (on the final years of a contract longer than 7 years) the percentage that his cap hit was at the time of signingshould be applied to his "retirement" years. Not much of difference but it would add up.

Awaz I'm sure can tell you a hell of a lot better than I can how much Pronger's contract will suck if he retires in the next 2-3 years.

All that being said there should just be a maximum term for all contracts.

oh man is it going to suck. the difference between pronger's and the others though, is that the others will come off the cap when they retire because they were under 35 when the contract was signed. so if kovalchuk retires next year the last (what is it, 9 years?) wont count against the cap.. the flyers will have chris pronger's 4.9 mil hit until chris pronger is 42. nothing else can effect it. cant waive him, him retiring cant fix it, buying him out saves like 100k in cap space per year, they could potentially try to get him on LTIR, a la lappy (circumventing the cap claim can be made in full force here), but thats the only way they can get rid of it

i HATE chris pronger's contract.
